The Manxman (1917 Film)
''The Manxman'' (also known as ''The Manx-Man'') is a 1916 British silent drama film directed by George Loane Tucker and starring Elisabeth Risdon, Henry Ainley and Fred Groves. It is based on the 1894 novel of the same name by Hall Caine. A second silent adaptation, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, was released in 1929. Upon its release in England in December 1916, ''The Manxman'' was a financial and critical success. It was one of relatively few British films to also become a hit in the United States. No copies of the film are known to exist, and ''The Manxman'' nitrate was destroyed by a fire in the 1965 MGM vault fire. George Loane Tucker
George Loane Tucker (June 12, 1872 – June 20, 1921) was an American actor, silent film director, screenwriter, producer, and editor. Career Tucker was born George S. Loane in Chicago to George Loane and stage actress Ethel Tucker. After graduating from the University of Chicago, he got a job as a railroad clerk. He was chief clerk for the Maintenance of Way. Tucker was later the youngest man to be promoted to Contracting Freight Agent. After his first wife died while giving birth to the couple's son, Tucker quit his job. On the advice of friends, he began acting in stage productions. By the mid-1910s, films were becoming a more popular draw for audiences which led Tucker to film acting and scenario writing. In 1911, he wrote a script for the short drama film ''Their First Misunderstanding''. The film, which starred Mary Pickford, was a surprise hit. John Marlborough East
John Marlborough East (1860–1924) was a British stage and film actor. He was an early film star who received over 3,000 votes in ''Picturegoer'' magazine's 1916 contest to establish the "Greatest British Film Player".Sweet p.15 He was a founder of the Neptune Studios in Borehamwood,Sweet p.15 which is today the site of Elstree Studios. However, his career rapidly declined. He made his final picture ''Owd Bob'' in 1924, and died the same year. Guy Newall
Guy Newall (25 May 1885 – 25 February 1937) was a British actor, screenwriter and film director. He was born on the Isle of Wight on 25 May 1885. He began his film career by acting in the 1915 film '' The Heart of Sister Ann''. In 1920 he directed his first film, and went on to direct a further ten including '' The Chinese Puzzle'' before his death in 1937. He established a production company with George Clark whom he had met during the First World War, and they raised finance to construct a new studios at Beaconsfield Studios. Mary Merrall (5 January 1890 – 31 August 1973), born Elsie Lloyd, was an English actress whose career of over 60 years encompassed stage, film and television work. Stage career Merrall's stage career started in her teens, making her first stage appearance in 1907, as Queenie Merrall, and for the rest of her life she remained a well-known and respected stage actress. Although she was based in London, she often appeared in other prestigious venues in the UK such as the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the Theatre Royal, Glasgow.
