''The Man Outside'' is a 1933 British crime film directed by George A. Cooper and starring Henry Kendall, Gillian Lind and Joan Gardner. It was shot at Twickenham Studios in London and features sets designed by the art director James A. Carter. Made as a quota quickie, it was distributed by RKO Pictures. Chibnall p.273It is unrelated to the play ''The Man Outside'', which was not written until 1946. Plot summary A criminal gang searches for stolen diamonds stashed in a country house following a major robbery. ''The Man Outside'' (, literally ''Outside, at the door'') is a play by Wolfgang Borchert, written in a few days in the late autumn of 1946. It made its debut on German radio on 13 February 1947. ''The Man Outside'' describes the hopelessness of a post-war soldier called Beckmann who returns from Russia to find that he has lost his wife and his home, as well as his illusions and beliefs. He finds every door he comes to closed; even nature seems to reject him. Due to its release during the sensitive immediate postwar period, Borchert subtitled his play "''A play that no theatre wants to perform and no audience wants to see.''" Despite this, the first radio broadcast (February 1947) was very successful. The first theatrical production of ''The Man Outside'' (at the ''Hamburger Kammerspiele'') opened on the day after Borchert's death, 21 November 1947. The play consists of five scenes in one act. Ethel Maude Warwick (13 October 1882 – 12 September 1951) was a British stage actress, appearing in both plays and films. Warwick was also a model for several artists, prominently for John William Godward. Biography Early years Ethel Maude Warwick was a daughter of Frank and Maude Warwick, and was born in Hardingstone, Northampton, on 13 October 1882. Her education began in Margate and Hampstead, but by the early 1890s she was studying to become an artist at the London Polytechnic. Ethel became an artists model to help pay for her tuition at the London Polytechnic, which led to her meeting Herbert Draper; Draper used her as a model for several of his paintings, including '' The Lament for Icarus''.
