The Lost Album (The Smithereens Album)
''The Lost Album'' is the twelfth studio album by American rock band the Smithereens, released on September 23, 2022, by Sunset Blvd Records. It comprises tracks recorded in 1993 for an abandoned album, and is the first album of previously unreleased original material in eleven years, since the release of ''2011'' in 2011. Background In 1993, the Smithereens were in between the end of their contract with Capitol Records and the beginning of their deal with RCA. There had been a management change at Capitol Records and a number of artists, including the Smithereens, were let go in summer 1993. Since the release of their last album, 1991's '' Blow Up'', the band had written a batch of songs they wanted to record. The Smithereens
The Smithereens are an American rock band from Carteret, New Jersey, United States. The group formed in 1980 with members Pat DiNizio (vocals & guitar), Jim Babjak (guitar & vocals), Mike Mesaros (bass guitar & vocals), and Dennis Diken (drums & percussion). This original lineup continued until 2006, when Mesaros left the band and Severo Jornacion took over on bass guitar until Mesaros' return in 2016. After DiNizio died in 2017, the band continued performing live shows as a trio (Babjak, Mesaros and Diken) with various guest vocalists. The band are perhaps best known for a string of hits in the late 1980s through the mid-1990s, including "Only a Memory", " A Girl Like You" and " Too Much Passion". Jangle
Jangle or jingle-jangle is a sound typically characterized by undistorted, treble-heavy electric guitars (particularly 12-strings) played in a droning chordal style (by strumming or arpeggiating). The sound is mainly associated with pop music as well as 1960s guitar bands, folk rock, and 1980s indie music. It is sometimes classed as its own subgenre, jangle pop. Music critics use the term to suggest guitar pop that evokes a bright mood. ''Goldmine'', established in September 1974 by Brian Bukantis out of Fraser, Michigan, is an American magazine that focuses on the collectors' market for records, tapes, CDs, and music-related memorabilia. ''Songs and Sounds'' is the debut solo album by Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens, released in 1997 on Velvel Records. Recorded during a hiatus from The Smithereens, the album features bassist J.J. Burnel, drummer Tony "Thunder" Smith and saxophonist Sonny Fortune billed as the Pat DiNizio Foursome. The album is produced by Smithereens veteran Don Dixon. Musically, the album is not a major departure from the jangly, Beatlesque power pop that The Smithereens were known for, though on a few songs DiNizio explores jazz, soundtrack and torch song influences. The album opens and closes with two songs from classic films: the melancholy "Where I Am Going (Jennie's Song)" from Portrait of Jennie (1948) and the jazz-tinged "I'd Rather Have the Blues" from Kiss Me Deadly (1955). Pat DiNizio
Patrick Michael DiNizio (October 12, 1955 – December 12, 2017) was the lead singer, songwriter, and founding member of the band The Smithereens, which he formed in 1980 with Jim Babjak, Dennis Diken, and Mike Mesaros, from Carteret, New Jersey. Life and career DiNizio was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby Scotch Plains, where he attended Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. DiNizio was a trash hauler, working for his father while trying to break into the music business. He has cited his influences as Buddy Holly and The Beatles. Jim Babjak (born November 17, 1957) is an American guitarist and ex-banker. He is the lead guitar player and co-founder of The Smithereens. Babjak has written and sung several songs for the band. He also is the leader of the band ''Buzzed Meg''.
