The Law And Society Trust
The Law and Society Trust is a non-profit making body in Sri Lanka that was set up in Colombo in 1982 and its headquartered at No. 3 Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 00800, Sri Lanka. The activities of the trust concerns with improving public awareness on civil and political rights; social, economic and cultural rights and equal access to justice. The Trust is a member organization of the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA). Mission The Trust is concerned with the consideration and improvement of professional skills within the legal community. The Law and Society Trust has taken a leading role in promoting co-operation between government and society within South Asia on questions relating to human rights, democracy and minority protection and has participated in initiatives to develop a global intellectual and policy agenda. Deshamanya Nissanka Parakrama Wijeyeratne ( si, නිශ්ශංක පරාක්රම විජයරත්න) (14 June 1924 – 7 January 2007), known as ''Nissanka Wijeyeratne'', was a Sri Lankan politician, civil servant, diplomat and English language poet. He was also the Diyawadana Nilame (chief lay custodian) of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy from 1975 to 1985. At the time of death he was serving as the chairman of The Law and Society Trust in Sri Lanka. Neelakandan Tiruchelvam, PC ( ta, நீலகண்டன் திருச்செல்வம்; 31 January 1944 – 29 July 1999) was a Sri Lankan Tamil lawyer, academic, human rights activist and politician. He was a Member of Parliament and Director of the International Centre for Ethnic Studies. He advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Sri Lankan Civil War and is considered one of the most influential researchers on constitutional law and constitutional theory in Sri Lanka. On 29 July 1999, Tiruchelvam was assassinated.
