The Knife (1961 Film)
''The Knife'' ( nl, Het Mes) is a 1961 Dutch drama film directed by Fons Rademakers. It is based on the short story of the same name by Hugo Claus from his collection ''The Black Emperor''. Claus also wrote the screenplay for the film. ''The Knife'' is a coming-of-age story about Thomas, a thirteen-year-old boy who has a contentious relationship with his mother and starts to have conflicting feelings about his female friend, Toni. The film was entered into the 1961 Cannes Film Festival where it competed for the Palme d'Or. Plot Thomas is a 13-year-old boy in Limburg who lives with his mother. Since his father's death, his mother has begun a relationship with Oscar, his dad's best friend. This drives a wedge between mother and son, who thinks his mother is trying to replace his dad with Oscar. At an exhibition at a monastery, Thomas steals an antique knife. Fons Rademakers
Alphonse Marie "Fons" Rademakers (5 September 1920 – 22 February 2007) was a Dutch actor, film director, film producer and screenwriter. His 1960 film '' Makkers Staakt uw Wild Geraas'' was entered into the 11th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Award. During a career spanning several decades he directed 11 films, including '' The Assault'', which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1986, and ''The Village on the River'', nominated for the same award in 1959. Making him both the first Dutch director to be nominated and win this award. He granted a wide-ranging interview to Radio Netherlands in 1987. He died in 2007 in a Geneva hospital of emphysema, after the life-support machines were switched off at his request. Het Vrije Volk
''Het Vrije Volk'' was a Dutch social-democratic daily newspaper. It was the successor, after World War II, of the socialist daily '' Het Volk''. The paper appeared legally 1 March 1945 in Eindhoven. From 28 January 1946, all subdivisions of the newspaper were united and a national edition was introduced. For a time, it was the biggest newspaper in the Netherlands and at its peak it had over 300 editors and reporters. After 1958, the number of subscribers decreased rapidly. The newspaper disappeared in 1970 as a national newspaper from Amsterdam, only regional editions remained and at the end of 1971 only Rotterdam was its home base. The last edition entitled ''Het Vrije Volk'' appeared on 30 March 1991 and it was merged with the ''Rotterdams Nieuwsblad'' into the ''Rotterdams Dagblad''. Hugo Maurice Julien Claus (; 5 April 1929 – 19 March 2008) was a leading Belgian author who published under his own name as well as various pseudonyms. Claus' literary contributions spanned the genres of drama, the novel, and poetry; he also left a legacy as a painter and film director.
