The King (2002 Film)
''The King'' ( el, Ο Βασιλιάς/O Vasilias) is a Greek drama film directed by Nikos Grammatikos. The film released in 2002 and stars Vangelis Mourikis, Marilita Lambropoulou and Minas Hatzisavvas. It won the Golden Piramide in 2003 Cairo International Film Festival as well as four awards in Greek State Film Awards. Plot A young man, recently released from prison, returns to his childhood hometown in order to escape from his recent criminal past. There, he is confronted with suspicion and hostility by local people, including the community leader. The only friendly person is the policeman. After his former girlfriend arrives, his past catches up with him and conflict with locals goes to extremes. Vangelis Mourikis ( el, Βαγγέλης Μουρίκης) is a Greek film actor. He has appeared in more than thirty films since 1982. He studied in Australia where he did his first works. In 1990s he returned to Greece and devoted himself to independent cinema. He has won seven awards both leading and supporting actor. Marilita Lambropoulou
Marilita Lambropoulou ( el, Μαριλίτα Λαμπροπούλου, ''Marilíta Lampropoúlou''; born July 15, 1974, in Athens, Greece) is a Greek actress. She is very popular with home audiences for her work in films like ''Athens Blues'' (Μια Μέρα τη Νύχτα, ''Mia Mera ti Nychta''), directed by Giorgos Panousopoulos (2002) and ''The King'' (Ο Βασιλιάς, ''O Vasilias''), directed by Nikos Grammatikos (2002), for which she won the "Quality Award". Marilita trained at the Theatre Studies Department of the University of Patras, as well as at a series of seminars organised by the National Theatre. Greek State Film Awards
The Greek State Film Awards ( el, Κρατικά Βραβεία Κινηματογράφου) was a part of Thessaloniki International Film Festival concerning exclusively Greek movies. It was one of the most important events in Greek cinema, from its institution in 1992 until 2008. Until 1991, only Greek movies participated in the Thessaloniki Film Festival. Since 1992 the festival became international and a separate award was instituted for Greek movies. At first the new award was named State Film Awards and later State Film Quality Awards (Κρατικά Κινηματογραφικά Βραβεία Ποιότητας). It was given out by the Greek Ministry of Culture.
