The Iron Heart (1920 Film)
''The Iron Heart'' is a 1920 American silent drama film directed by Denison Clift and starring Madlaine Traverse, George A. McDaniel, and Edwin B. Tilton. Plot As described in a film magazine, John Regan's (Tilton) daughter Esther (Traverse) assumes management of the Regan Steel Mills upon her father's death. The Associated Trust endeavors to gain control of the mills, but meets with rebuff at the hands of Esther. Darwin McAllister (McDaniel), employed by the Trust to get Esther to sell out, finds himself in love with her and resigns from the Associated. He is employed by Miss Regan and thus arouses the jealousy of Dan Cullen (Deeley), a dishonest employee of the Regan plant. Dan attempts to block the shipment of a consignment of steel, but Darwin and a group of loyal employees rout the Trust's hired bullies and get the shipment through. Denison Clift
Denison Clift (1885 – 1961) was an American playwright, novelist, screenwriter and film director. He directed in both America and Great Britain, mainly during the Silent Era. Biography Clift was educated at Stanford University. He began his career as a short story writer, novelist, and playwright. After he started writing, Cecil B. DeMille entrusted him with writing Lasky scenarios. Clift entered the film industry in 1918, penning the screenplay for William S. Hart's '' Wolves of the Rail''. He began a contract writer with Fox, and was promoted director in 1920. Less than a year later, Clift was imported by a British firm in a larger movement to liven their domestic silent films by employing Hollywood directors. He directed a number of British films during the silent era, such as ''Demos'' (1921) featuring fellow American expatriate Evelyn Brent and '' The Love of Mary, Queen of Scots'' (1923), with Fay Compton in the title role. Melbourne MacDowell
Willet Melbourne MacDowell (November 22, 1856 – February 18, 1941) was an American stage and screen actor. He began on the legitimate stage in the 1870s and first appeared on the silent screen in 1917. He used the stage name Virginia Drew Prescott. Biography Willet Melbourne MacDowell was born in Little Washington, New Jersey (now South River, New Jersey). He had an older brother named E. A. MacDowell, who was the father of future actress Claire McDowell. As a teen Melbourne went to sea in the Merchant Marines, eventually becoming a mate. Back in the US he had his first acting experience in Montreal at a theatre where he was a ticket seller, assistant doorkeeper and where his brother was employed as an actor. MacDowell was occasionally asked upon to act. Here in Montreal he got a chance to act with Adelaide Neilson, a legend in her short life, in the Shakespeare play ''As You Like It''. Ben Deeley (January 22, 1878 - September 23, 1924) born J. Bernard Deeley also credited as Ben Deely, was an American actor and composer. Biography Born in 1878, Deeley appeared in silent films, never having lived to the talkie era. He composed a popular ragtime song called ''The Kleptomaniac Rag'' in 1913. His best known performance in films is the strange powdered character Mr. Jones in Maurice Tourneur's ''Victory'' alongside Lon Chaney, Jack Holt, and Wallace Beery. He was at one time married to Marie Wayne, who costarred with him in ''The Patchwork Girl of Oz'' (1914), and to actress Barbara La Marr. Deeley died of double pneumonia. Madlaine Traverse (born Mary Businsky; August 1, 1875 – January 7, 1964) was an American stage and screen actress from Cleveland, Ohio. In the course of her career she is alternately billed as "Madaline Traverse", "Madeline Traverse" and "Madeline Travers".''Pictorial History of the Silent Screen'' by Daniel Blum c. 1953 pages 37, 59 & 108 Silent movie actress Traverse was a leading lady of the Fox Film Corporation in the second decade of the twentieth century.
