This is an episode list for the 1960s British television series ''The Avengers (TV series), The Avengers''. The series was aired in Britain, on ITV (TV network), ITV, between 1961 and 1969. The first four series were made in black-and-white. The first three were pre-recorded on videotape (except where noted) with occasional filmed inserts. Beginning with series 4 the series moved to all-film production, shot using the single-camera setup, single-camera method. From series 5 onward, the episodes were filmed in colour. The sixth series was broadcast in the US before it was shown in the UK. The Avengers (TV Series)
''The Avengers'' is a British Spy fiction, espionage television series, created in 1961, that ran for 161 episodes until 1969. It initially focused on David Keel (Ian Hendry), aided by John Steed (Patrick Macnee). Hendry left after the first series; Steed then became the main character, partnered with a succession of assistants. His most famous assistants were intelligent, stylish and assertive women: Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg), and Tara King (Linda Thorson). Dresses and suits for the series were made by Pierre Cardin. The series ran from 1961 until 1969, screening as one-hour episodes for its entire run. The pilot episode, "Hot Snow (The Avengers), Hot Snow", aired on 7 January 1961. The final episode, "Bizarre", aired on 21 April 1969 in the United States, and on 17 May 1969 in the United Kingdom. Hot Snow (The Avengers)
"Hot Snow" is the debut episode of the 1960s cult British spy-fi television series '' The Avengers'', starring Ian Hendry and Patrick Macnee. It originally aired on ABC on 7 January 1961. Only about 20 minutes, the first of three acts, remain. The episode was directed by Don Leaver and generally acknowledged to have been written by Ray Rigby, but Brian Clemens claimed to have written it. Plot Dr. David Keel's (Ian Hendry) fiancée and surgery receptionist Peggy ( Catherine Woodville) is murdered by a ruthless gang of drug dealers. By accident he receives a consignment of heroin at his surgery. Believing it to have been sent by the gang who killed his fiancée, he seeks revenge and with the help of a mysterious figure John Steed ( Patrick Macnee) they hunt the gang down. They find the gang leader Spicer and set a trap for him but he escapes and is finally caught in the next episode. Charles Wade (actor)
Sir Charles Gregory Wade KCMG, KC, JP (26 January 1863 – 26 September 1922) was Premier of New South Wales – 21 October 1910. According to Percival Serle, "Wade was a public-spirited man of high character. His ability, honesty and courage were quickly recognized and, though he could not be called a great leader, he was either in office or leader of the opposition for nearly the whole of his political life of 14 years. His career as a judge was short, but his sense of justice and grasp of principles and details, eminently fitted him for that position." Alister Williamson
Alister Williamson (17 June 1918 – 19 May 1999) was an Australian-born character actor, who appeared in many British films and television series of the 1960s and 1970s. A big, craggy-faced man, he would usually be found playing gruff police inspectors or henchmen in adventure series and police dramas of the period. Murray Melvin
Murray Melvin (born 10 August 1932) is an English actor. He is best known for his acting work with Joan Littlewood, Ken Russell and Stanley Kubrick. He is the author of two books: ''The Art of Theatre Workshop'' (2006) and ''The Theatre Royal, A History of the Building'' (2009). Early years Melvin was born on 10 August 1932 in St. Pancras, London, the son of Hugh Victor Melvin and Maisie Winifred, née Driscoll. Melvin left his north London secondary school at the age of fourteen unable to master fractions but as head prefect, a qualification he says he gained by always having clean fingernails and well-combed hair. Moira Redmond
Moira Redmond (14 July 1928 – 16 March 2006) was an English actress. Biography She was born in Bognor Regis, Sussex, England. Her parents were actors and director managers, although she was also cared for by other relatives. Her grandfather was the actor manager playwright E Hill Mitchelson. As a young actress, she joined the Windmill Girls (evoked in the film ''Mrs Henderson Presents'') who performed non-stop revues and nude tableaux at the Windmill Theatre in the West End. Several years later, she married her first husband and emigrated to Australia, but the marriage did not endure so she returned to Britain in 1957. While in Australia, Redmond became a successful radio actress. Godfrey Quigley (4 May 1923 – 7 September 1994) was an Irish film, television and stage actor. He appeared in Stanley Kubrick's films ''A Clockwork Orange'' and ''Barry Lyndon''. Philip Stone (14 April 1924 – 15 June 2003) was an English actor, well known for portraying film characters such as "Pa", the father of Alex DeLarge, in ''A Clockwork Orange''; General Alfred Jodl in '' Hitler: The Last Ten Days''; Delbert Grady in '' The Shining''; and Captain Phillip Blumburtt in ''Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom''. Katherine Woodville (born Catherine Woodville; 12 March 19385 June 2013) was an English film and television actress. She changed her professional name to Kate Woodville in 1967 upon moving to the U.S., where she eventually became a life member of the Actors Studio. Ray Rigby (screenwriter)
Ray Rigby (1916, Rochford – 1995, Guadalajara, Mexico) was a British screenwriter and novelist. He is mainly known for '' The Hill'', a searing account of an abusive military prison, which was directed by Sidney Lumet and was greeted with critical acclaim, winning the Best Screenplay award at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival, an honour also bestowed by the Writers' Guild of Great Britain the following year, when it also won a BAFTA for Best Screenplay. The film was inspired by Rigby's own experience in a British military prison in World War II when he spent two terms in field punishment detention centres. He co-wrote the film ''Operation Crossbow'', also released in 1965. Don Leaver
Don Leaver (27 September 1929 – 13 December 2015) was a television director and producer, with a career spanning from 1960 to 2000. He was known for '' The Avengers'', '' A Fine Romance'', ''A Touch of Frost'' and ''Prime Suspect'', but directed or produced many other TV dramas. Leaver was born in London, England, his mother dying in childbirth. His father Edward was a chauffeur so Leaver was brought up mainly by his grandmother in Streatham. After training as an actor at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art he quickly moved into TV production before being invited to direct by Sydney Newman, then with the ITV franchise holder ABC. He directed '' The Avengers'' having already directed its original star, Ian Hendry, in '' Police Surgeon''.
