The Fire On The Snow (1951 Production)
''The Fire on the Snow'' is a 1951 British radio drama that aired on the BBC. It was based on the Australian verse drama ''The Fire on the Snow'' by Douglas Stewart about the Terra Nova Expedition to Antarctica by Robert Falcon Scott. The production was the first time an Australian radio drama had received such a prestigious production at the BBC. It was directed by Tyrone Guthrie and featured two movie stars, John Mills and Peter Finch. Stewart's play originally aired in Australia in 1941. Peter Finch was meant to appear in the original production but enlisted in the army. The play was much acclaimed in Australia and was performed several times. Tyrone Guthrie rarely produced for the BBC but was an admirer of the play and agreed to direct it. Two of the cast - Finch and Peter Bathurst - were Australian, and Mills had previously played Scott in the 1948 film ''Scott of the Antarctic''. Douglas Stewart (6 May 191314 February 1985) was a major twentieth century Australian poet, as well as short story writer, essayist and literary editor. He published 13 collections of poetry, 5 verse plays, including the well-known ''Fire on the Snow'', many short stories and critical essays, and biographies of Norman Lindsay and Kenneth Slessor. He also edited several poetry anthologies. Petty Officer Edgar Evans (7 March 1876 – 17 February 1912) was a Royal Navy officer and member of the "Polar Party" in Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition, ''Terra Nova'' Expedition to the South Pole in 1911–1912. Henry Robertson Bowers
Henry Robertson Bowers (29 July 1883 – c. 29 March 1912) was one of Robert Falcon Scott's polar party on the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition of 1910–1913, all of whom died during their return from the South Pole. Early life Bowers was born on 29 July 1883 in Greenock, Scotland. The only son and youngest of three children of Alexander Bowers, a naval captain and independent merchantman, and Emily, née Webb. He was of Scottish descent. After his father died in Rangoon, his mother alone raised him from the age of three with his two older sisters. By January 1896, the family had moved to Streatham, in South London, and lived at 19 Pathfield Road, where Mrs Bowers was still residing in 1899.
