The Finding Of Moses (Gentileschi, Madrid)
''The Finding of Moses'' is an early 1630s painting by Orazio Gentileschi. There are two versions, the prime version is in The National Gallery in London and the second is in Museo del Prado in Madrid. London version This version was bought by a private collection in 1995 and went on long term loan to the National Gallery in 2002. After a loan of nearly 20 years the Gallery succeeded in purchasing the work for £22 Million in December 2019. Commissioned by Charles I for his wife Henrietta Maria to celebrate the birth of their son and heir Charles II, it was painted for the Queen's House in Greenwich. Upon completion it was hung in the Great Hall, opposite the 1628 version of ''Lot and His Daughters''. After Charles’ execution it was returned to his widow in France in 1660. Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. The Orleans Collection was a very important collection of over 500 paintings formed by Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans, mostly acquired between about 1700 and his death in 1723. Apart from the great royal-become-national collections of Europe it is arguably the greatest private collection of Western art, especially Italian, ever assembled, and probably the most famous, helped by the fact that most of the collection has been accessible to the public since it was formed, whether in Paris, or subsequently in London, Edinburgh and elsewhere. Sir Arthur Hopton (c. 1588 to 1650) was an English diplomat who spent most of his career in Madrid, where he was Resident Agent from 1630 to 1636, then Ambassador from 1638 to 1645. Uncle of Sir Ralph Hopton, a Royalist general during the 1642 to 1646 First English Civil War, Sir Arthur was rarely paid, and was unable to achieved much, but left detailed memoranda on his activities. Francesco Gentileschi was a 17th-century Italian painter of the Baroque period. He was son of Orazio Gentileschi Orazio Lomi Gentileschi (1563–1639) was an Italian painter. Born in Tuscany, he began his career in Rome, painting in a Mannerist style, much of his work consisting of painting the figures within the decorative schemes of other artists.
