''The Fellowship of the Frog'' is a 1925 crime novel by the British writer Edgar Wallace. It was part of a series of books featuring the character Inspector Elk of Scotland Yard. In 1936 it was adapted into a West End play ''The Frog'' by Ian Hay, which inspired the subsequent films. Film adaptations An American film serial ''Mark of the Frog'' was made in 1928. In 1937 it was turned into a British film ''The Frog'' directed by Jack Raymond and starring Gordon Harker as Elk. Due to its popularity it was followed by a sequel ''The Return of the Frog'' the next year. In 1959 the West German film ''Der Frosch mit der Maske'' film was made, inspired the novel. Edgar Wallace
Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1 April 1875 – 10 February 1932) was a British writer. Born into poverty as an illegitimate London child, Wallace left school at the age of 12. He joined the army at age 21 and was a war correspondent during the Second Boer War for Reuters and the '' Daily Mail''. Struggling with debt, he left South Africa, returned to London and began writing thrillers to raise income, publishing books including '' The Four Just Men'' (1905). Drawing on his time as a reporter in the Congo, covering the Belgian atrocities, Wallace serialised short stories in magazines such as ''The Windsor Magazine'' and later published collections such as ''Sanders of the River'' (1911). He signed with Hodder and Stoughton in 1921 and became an internationally recognised author. Gordon Harker
William Gordon Harker (7 August 1885 – 2 March 1967) was an English stage and film actor. Harker was one of the sons of Sarah Elizabeth Harker, née Hall, (1856–1927), and Joseph Harker (1855–1927), a much admired set painter for the theatre for whom the ''Dracula'' character Jonathan Harker was named. Harker had a long career on the stage, from 1902 to the 1950s. In addition, he appeared in 68 films between 1921 and 1959, including three silent films directed by Alfred Hitchcock and in several scenes in ''Elstree Calling'' (1930), a revue film co-directed by Hitchcock. Jack Raymond
Jack Raymond (1886–1953) was an English actor and film director. Born in Wimborne, Dorset in 1886, he began acting before the First World War in '' A Detective for a Day''. In 1921 he directed his first film and gradually he wound down his acting to concentrate completely on directing - making more than forty films in total before his death in 1953. He was associated with the Hepworth Studios of Walton on Thames, since his portrait appears on a studio publicity postcard when he was probably in his early twenties. He had a major success in 1930 with ''The Great Game'', one of the earliest films devoted to football and followed it up with '' Up for the Cup'' a year later. He remade '' Up for the Cup'' in 1950. A serial film, film serial (or just serial), movie serial, or chapter play, is a motion picture form popular during the first half of the 20th century, consisting of a series of short subjects exhibited in consecutive order at one theater, generally advancing weekly, until the series is completed. Generally, each serial involves a single set of characters, protagonistic and antagonistic, involved in a single story, which has been edited into chapters after the fashion of serial fiction and the episodes cannot be shown out of order or as a single or a random collection of short subjects.
