The Eugene O'Neill Award
The Eugene O'Neill Award (Swedish: ''O'Neill-stipendiet'') is one of Sweden's finest awards for stage actors. It is a scholarship for actors at the Swedish theater. It has been awarded annually by the Royal Dramatic Theatre since 1956. History Eugene Gladstone O'Neill (1888–1953) was a noted American playwright. He was a four winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama and was the Nobel laureate for literature in 1936. Just before Eugene O'Neill died in 1953, he drew up a will in which he gave the then not yet staged play '' Long Day's Journey Into Night'' (written in 1941) to Sweden's Royal Dramatic Theatre (''Dramaten''), along with exclusive first performance rights. The play had its world premiere in Stockholm on February 2, 1956. Royal Dramatic Theatre
The Royal Dramatic Theatre ( sv, Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern, colloquially ''Dramaten'') is Sweden's national stage for "spoken drama", founded in 1788. Around one thousand shows are put on annually on the theatre's five running stages. The theatre has been at its present location in the Art Nouveau building at Nybroplan, Stockholm, since 1908. The theatre was built by the architect Fredrik Lilljekvist. Famous artists like Carl Milles and Carl Larsson were involved in making the decorations, and some of the interior decorations were made by Prince Eugen. The theatre's acting school, the Royal Dramatic Training Academy, produced many actors and directors who would go on to be famous, including Gustaf Molander (who also taught there), Alf Sjöberg, Greta Garbo, Vera Schmiterlöw, Signe Hasso, Ingrid Bergman, Gunnar Björnstrand, Max von Sydow, and Bibi Andersson. Olle Hilding
Olle Hilding (born Hilding Olof Johansson; 19 July 1898 – 9 November 1983) was a Swedish stage and film actor. He appeared in motion pictures between 1923-1982. Biography Hilding Olof Johansson was born and died in the Katarina Parish of Stockholm, Sweden. From 1920–1923 he toured the country with the theater company of Oscar Winge (1884-1951) and made his film debut under the direction of film director, Victor Sjöström (1879–1960) in ''Vem doer'' (1922). During much of the 1930s, Hilding helped author Erik Lindorm (1889-1941), with his book chronicles, most of which featured historical personalities and events as themes. Hilding returned to the theater in 1940. In 1934 he married actress Olga Appellöf (1898-1989). He won the Eugene O'Neill Award in 1973. Anita Björk
Anita Björk (25 April 1923 – 24 October 2012) was a Swedish actress. She was born in Tällberg, Dalarna and attended the Royal Dramatic Training Academy from 1942 to 1945. She was a leading lady of Swedish theatre for many years and worked on the national stage Dramaten from 1945 onwards and played more than 100 roles over the years (which makes her one of the greatest actors of Dramaten). Anita Björk played leading roles in film in a number of genres, including thrillers and crime mystery dramas such as ''Det kom en gäst'' (1947), ''Moln över Hellesta'' (1956), ''Damen i svart'' (1958), ''Mannekäng i rött'' (1958) and ''Tärningen är kastad'' (1960). Birgitta Valberg (16 December 1916 – 29 March 2014) was a Swedish actress. She was best known for her work in several Ingmar Bergman films made over a 30-year period, including the Bergman produced ''Paradise Place'' (1977). For her role in this film, which was directed by Gunnel Lindblom, another member of Bergman's repertory company, she won the award for Best Actress at the 13th Guldbagge Awards. Jan-Olof Strandberg
Jan-Olof Strandberg (9 September 1926 – 2 May 2020) was a Swedish stage and film actor. He appeared in 45 films since 1947. On stage one of his most famous parts was as Vladimir in Samuel Beckett's '' Waiting for Godot'', at Sweden's Royal Dramatic Theatre (where he performed 85 parts over the years). Gertrud Fridh (26 November 1921 – 11 October 1984) was a Swedish stage and film actress. Biography Born in Gothenburg, Fridh later studied acting at Gothenburg City Theatre's acting school from 1941 to 1944. She worked in the 1940s and 1950s at the city theatres in Gothenburg and Malmö.
