The Enduring Passion For Ink
''The Enduring Passion for Ink: Films on Contemporary Ink Painters'' is a 2013 documentary film independently produced by scholar-curator Britta Erickson. The film features 10 contemporary Chinese ink artists at the vanguard of the contemporary Chinese art world today. The documentary opens the door to what contemporary Chinese ink painting is to a wider audience and addresses fundamental choices confronting these leading ink artists. Artists featured The 10 artists featured span a wide range of ages, education backgrounds, artistic approaches, and philosophies. Bingyi
Bingyi (Chinese: 冰 逸), is a Chinese artist, curator, scholar, architectural designer, cultural critic and activist. Education Bingyi received her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College in 1998, her M. A. from Yale University in 2001 and a Doctorate in Art History from Yale University in 2005. Her dissertation entitled "Rereading Mawangdui, From Chu to Han" was ranked the sixth most read dissertation by ProQuest amongst 70,000 dissertations in 2006. Artwork Bingyi is best known for her enormous-scale ink paintings in which she works, over months or years, with the environmental conditions of a specific site, to capture a reality-scaled record of the climatic and topological forces shaping a natural or urban landscape. Li Huasheng
Li Huasheng (Simplified Chinese: 李华生; Hanyu Pinyin: Lǐ Huáshēng) (1944–2018) was a Chinese artist from Yibin in Sichuan province. He received his first art training in one of Chongqing's culture halls. He met Chen Zizhuang in 1972, and studied traditional Chinese painting under him, mastering his style in just four years. Li's fame was so great that in 1980, he was invited to showcase his art for Chinese paramount leader Deng Xiaoping. In 1985 he was elected an honorary member of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, and the following year was accepted into the Sichuan Academy of Poetry, Calligraphy, and Painting. Li's life has been extensively chronicled in Jerome Silbergeld and Gong Jisui's ''Contradictions: Artistic Life, The Socialist State, and the Chinese Painter Li Huasheng'', and his life has been said to " pitomizethe path of the artist in socialist China". Xu Bing
Xu Bing (; born 1955) is a Chinese artist who served as vice-president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He is known for his printmaking skills and installation art, as well as his creative artistic use of language, words, and text and how they have affected our understanding of the world. He is an A.D. White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University. He was awarded the MacArthur Fellows Program in 1999 and the Fukuoka Prize in 2003. Biography Born in Chongqing in 1955, Xu grew up in Beijing. His father was the head of the history department at Peking University. In 1975, near the end of the Cultural Revolution, he was relocated to the countryside for two years as part of Mao Zedong's "re-education" policy. Yang Jiechang
Yang Jiechang (; born 1956 in Foshan, Guangdong Province) is a contemporary artist of Chinese origin. He is known for his proficiency in traditional Chinese media. Life Yang Jiechang was born in Foshan in Guangdong, Guangdong Province, PR China, in 1956. He grew up during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), but received a traditional education from his grandfather. From him he learned, how to write Chinese characters with a brush. He continued his training in calligraphy and other traditional Chinese techniques, such as paper-mounting, ink painting and meticulous color painting as an apprentice at the Foshan Folk Art Institute (1973-1978). Chinese Art
Chinese art is visual art that originated in or is practiced in China, Greater China or by Chinese artists. Art created by Chinese residing outside of China can also be considered a part of Chinese art when it is based in or draws on Chinese culture, heritage, and history.
