The EFFECTS
The EFFECTS (stylized as the EFFECTS) are a Washington, D.C. based math rock band consisting of Devin Ocampo, Matthew Dowling, and David Rich. They have released four digital EPs and a full-length album, ''Eyes to the Light'', on Dischord Records. Formed in Washington, D.C. in 2014, the band's music takes inspiration from indie rock, post-hardcore, and progressive rock and has been described as providing an "updated take on the D.C. sound." Ocampo is a former member of the Washington, D.C. groups Faraquet, Medications, Smart Went Crazy, and Deathfix. Additionally, he has toured and recorded with Beauty Pill, Mary Timony, and J. Robbins. Dowling was a member of D.C.-based indie rock band, Deleted Scenes and Rich performed in the band Buildings . The trio's debut album was greeted with praise in ''Washington City Paper'', ''Bandcamp Daily'', and ''Post-Trash''. Math Rock
Math rock is a style of progressive and indie rock with roots in bands such as King Crimson and Rush as well as 20th-century minimal music composers such as Steve Reich. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), counterpoint, odd time signatures, angular melodies, and extended, often dissonant, chords. Dischord Records
Dischord Records is a Washington, D.C.-based independent record label specializing in punk rock. The label is co-owned by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, who founded Dischord in 1980 to release ''Minor Disturbance'' by their band The Teen Idles. Faraquet
Faraquet is an American post-hardcore band from Washington D.C., United States, sometimes placed in the math rock genre. The trio formed in 1997 and disbanded in 2001 after releasing its debut full-length on Dischord Records. Faraquet were influenced by D.C.-based peers like Fugazi, Jawbox, and Nation of Ulysses as well as progressive rock bands like King Crimson. The band has recently reissued all of the material released prior to their full-length and briefly reformed to play shows in support of this project in Brazil and their native Washington, D.C. Following Faraquet's dissolution, Molter and Ocampo went on to form Medications, which released an EP and two albums on Dischord Records before going on hiatus in 2011. Smart Went Crazy
Smart Went Crazy was an American rock band from Washington, D.C. History Smart Went Crazy was formed by high school students, Chad Clark (guitar and vocals), Abram Goodrich (bass) and Hilary Soldati (cello and vocals). Following graduation the band expanded to include Jeff Boswell (guitar) and Tony Dennison (drums). Smart Went Crazy released their debut, ''Cubbyhole EP'', in 1994. This was independently released through their own label, CozyDisc. By 1995 they had developed a relationship with Dischord Records and released their first full-length album ''Now We're Even'' in 1995. After three U.S. tours in support of, and following, ''Now We're Even'', and with the replacement of drummer Tony Dennison with Devin Ocampo, they released their follow-up album, ''Con Art'', in 1997. Brendan John Canty (born March 9, 1966, in Teaneck, New Jersey) is an American musician, composer, producer and film maker, best known as the drummer for the band Fugazi. Beauty Pill is an American rock band from Washington, D.C., based largely around the songs and ideas of singer/guitarist/producer Chad Clark. Mary Timony
Mary Bozana Timony (born October 17, 1970) is an American independent singer-songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, and violist. She has been a member of the bands Helium, Autoclave and Wild Flag, and currently fronts Ex Hex. Timony's music is often heavy and dark, frequently using drones, beats, and modal melodies reminiscent of European Medieval music. She uses a number of alternate guitar tunings, most prominent of which is DADGAE. Her unique style has been cited as an influence amongst well respected and admired musicians such as Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney, Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz and many more. Deleted Scenes were an American art rock band formed in 2005. The band were disbanded in 2014. Background The band formed in 2005 in Washington, D.C. by three members of the short-lived Olney, MD, band Fell off the Face of the Earth: Dan Scheuerman (lead vocals and guitar), Matt Dowling (bass, keyboards, guitar and backing vocals), and Dominic Campanaro (guitar and keyboards). Ricardo Lagomasino (drums) joined in 2012, replacing Brian Hospital. The art rock style of Deleted Scenes is, according to Lane Billings of Paste Magazine, "nearly impossible to categorize," combining elements of rock, punk, avant-garde, pop, noise, psych, math rock, and Americana.
