The Diver (2000 Film)
''The Diver'' ( fi, Hyppääjä) is a 2000 Finnish short film directed by PV Lehtinen. It is an ode to diving and the aesthetics of movement. The film focuses on Helge Wasenius (born 1927), the grand old man of diving, who competed in two Olympic Games and performed clown dives. Lehtinen has said that the protagonist, Helge Wasenius, was his neighbour and childhood hero. When he started planning the film, an image of Wasenius hanging by his feet from the ten-meter diving tower of Helsinki Swimming Stadium was embedded in his head. The diving sequences in the film have been compared to Leni Riefenstahl. Lehtinen has said he was inspired by Herb Ritts’ photographs of divers more than Riefensthal. PV Lehtinen
PV Lehtinen (born 1969) is a Finnish film director, screenwriter and producer. He graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki as a director.His short film ''The Diver'' (''Hyppääjä'', 2000) won the Grand Prix and other main prizes at the Tampere Film Festival 2001. ''The Diver'' continued to win awards in other festivals with the last award won in 2006 at Milano International FICTS Fest. Lehtinen had a retrospective screening of his water-themed films in Germany at Ludwigsburg European Short Film Biennale in 2005 and Regensburg Short Film Week in 2007. In 2011, his short films had an open-air screening at the Helsinki Swimming Stadium as part of the annual Helsinki Festival. In his many short films, water often plays an important role, however he has indicated that the subject of the film determines if water will play a role. The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is the world's largest documentary film festival held annually since 1988 in Amsterdam. Over a period of twelve days, it has screened more than 300 films and sold more than 250,000 tickets. Visitors to the festival have increased from 65,000 in 2000 to 285,000 in 2018.
