''The Devil's Holiday'' is a 1930 American Pre-Code film starring Nancy Carroll, Phillips Holmes, ZaSu Pitts, James Kirkwood, Sr., Hobart Bosworth, and Ned Sparks, and released by Paramount Pictures. The movie was adapted by Edmund Goulding from his story, directed by Goulding, and released by Paramount Pictures. The film was nominated for Academy Award for Best Actress (Nancy Carroll). Plot A golddigger marries a young man for his money, but finds that she really loves him and wants to keep him despite his family's disapproval. Edmund Goulding
Edmund Goulding (20 March 1891 – 24 December 1959) was a British screenwriter and film director. As an actor early in his career he was one of the 'Ghosts' in the 1922 silent film ''Three Live Ghosts'' alongside Norman Kerry and Cyril Chadwick. Also in the early 1920s he wrote several screenplays for star Mae Murray for films directed by her then husband Robert Z. Leonard. Goulding is best remembered for directing cultured dramas such as ''Love'' (1927), ''Grand Hotel'' (1932) with Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford, ''Dark Victory'' (1939) with Bette Davis, and ''The Razor's Edge'' (1946) with Gene Tierney and Tyrone Power. He also directed the classic film noir '' Nightmare Alley'' (1947) with Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell, and the action drama '' The Dawn Patrol''. Paul Lukas
Paul Lukas (born Pál Lukács; 26 May 1894 – 15 August 1971) was a Hungarian actor. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor, and the first Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama for his performance in the film ''Watch on the Rhine'' (1943), reprising the role he created on the Broadway stage. Biography Lukas was born Pál Lukács in Budapest into a Jewish family, the son of Adolf Munkácsi and Mária Schneckendorf. He was later adopted by Mária (née Zilahy) and János Lukács, an advertising executive. Lukas made his stage debut in Budapest in 1916 and his film debut in 1917. At first, he played elegant, smooth womanizers, but increasingly he became typecast as a villain. He had a successful stage and film career in Hungary, Germany, and Austria, where he worked with Max Reinhardt. Wade Boteler (October 3, 1888 – May 7, 1943) was an American film actor and writer. He appeared in more than 430 films between 1919 and 1943. Biography He was born in Santa Ana, California, and died in Hollywood, California, from a heart attack. Boteler graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. After he graduated, he stayed there as a director until he joined the Army in World War I. For three years in the mid-1920s, he worked for Douglas MacLean's film company as both actor and writer.
