The Den (Ireland)
''The Den'' was a long-running popular children's television strand of Ireland's public broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann. First broadcast on 29 September 1986 on RTÉ1, it moved to Network 2 two years later. Initially a continuity strand for weekday afternoon programmes, ''The Den'' later expanded during the late 1990s and the 2000s until it became synonymous with RTÉ's children's output. At various times during its run, it was known as ''Dempsey's Den'', ''Den TV'' and ''Den2''. In mid-2010, RTÉ Television announced an overhaul of its children's output, with the launch of RTÉjr and TRTÉ. ''The Den'' aired for the last time on 19 September 2010. It returned for six weeks from November 2020. Ian Dempsey
Ian Dempsey (born 16 January 1961) is an Irish presenter of television and breakfast radio. He is the long-running presenter of the breakfast show on Today FM, self-titled ''The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show'', which runs from 6-9 am each weekday. He has won several major awards for his programmes and was the Republic of Ireland's tenth most-listened-to broadcaster in 2007. On 9 June 2010, he co-hosted the opening ceremony of the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games Irish heats at Thomond Park with Des Cahill. Early life Dempsey began his first experiments in radio in 1967 when at the age of six he made his first radio show in a friend's house. In 1978 he joined Dublin pirate station Capitol Radio, and later worked for Alternative Radio Dublin and Radio 257. Jo Maxi
''Jo Maxi'', named after Dublin slang for a taxi, was an Irish teenage entertainment show which would report on teenage issues. The presenters would discuss issues relating to teenagers through reports and studio discussions. They would also review books, movies and other TV shows. Gig Guides and job/study information was also reported each night. It was broadcast on Network 2 as part RTÉ's redevelopment of its second channel from October 1988. It was first presented by Ray D'Arcy, Clíona Ní Bhuachalla and various other presenters and reporters. Format ''Jo Maxi'' was presented from the RTÉ Studios in Donnybrook. It was broadcast each weeknight at 6 o'clock. Various reports were made by different presenters around the country with link-ups to different individuals telling viewers of events coming up in their areas. Ireland In The Eurovision Song Contest
Ireland has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 55 times since making its debut at the contest in Naples, missing only two contests since then ( and ). The contest final is broadcast in Ireland on RTÉ One. Ireland has a record total of seven wins, and is the only country to have won three times consecutively. Ireland's seven wins were achieved by Dana with "All Kinds of Everything" (), Johnny Logan with "What's Another Year" () and " Hold Me Now" (), Linda Martin with "Why Me" (), Niamh Kavanagh with "In Your Eyes" (), Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan with "Rock 'n' Roll Kids" () and Eimear Quinn with "The Voice" (). Johnny Logan is the only performer to have won twice and also wrote the 1992 winning entry. One of the successes of children's television strand, ''The Den (Ireland), The Den'', was its ability to continually produce an array of successful characters, many of whom then went on to achieve fame in other fields, both nationally and internationally. Generation I Generation I include Extraterrestrial life, extraterrestrials Zig and Zag (puppets), Zig and Zag and their dog Zuppy, all of whom were present from the second season of ''Dempsey's Den''. Zig and Zag left in 1993 but Zuppy remained to become one of the longest serving members of ''The Den'' team (alongside Don Conroy, a human). Zig and Zag Zig and Zag, the first (and possibly the most famous), are ten-year-old alien twins from the planet Zig and Zag (puppets), Zog.
