The Defender (1994 Film)
''The Bodyguard from Beijing'' (; released in the United States as ''The Defender'' and United Kingdom as ''Jet Li's The Defender'') is a 1994 Hong Kong action film directed by Corey Yuen, and starring Jet Li, who also produced. The film co-stars Christy Chung, Kent Cheng and Sing Ngai. The film was released theatrically in Hong Kong on 28 July 1994. Plot The film protagonizes Allan, a professional bodyguard based in Beijing whose tactical and martial skills and quick thinking are well shown as having protected several statesmen from assassination. He is hired by James, a wealthy Hong Kong businessman, to protect his beautiful girlfriend Michelle Leung, who is the only surviving witness to a murder, after all the others had been eliminated in various ways. Corey Yuen
Corey Yuen (; born Ying Gang-ming (殷元奎); 15 February 1951) is a Hong Kong director, film director, producer, action choreographer, and former actor. Yuen was a member of the Peking Opera Schools and one of the Seven Little Fortunes. As an actor, Yuen is perhaps best known as Rubber Legs' student in 1979 kung fu comedy film ''Dance of the Drunk Mantis''. As an action director, Yuen gained fame in American cinema beginning with 1998 film ''Lethal Weapon 4'', followed by the 2000 blockbuster ''X-Men'' and six of Jet Li's American works: ''Romeo Must Die'', ''Kiss of the Dragon'', ''The One'', ''Cradle 2 the Grave'', ''War'', and '' The Expendables''. ''Police Story 4: First Strike'' (), also known as ''First Strike'' or ''Jackie Chan's First Strike'', is a 1996 Hong Kong action comedy film directed and co-written by Stanley Tong, and starring Jackie Chan, Jackson Lou, Annie Wu, Bill Tung, Yuri Petrov, and Nonna Grishayeva. It is the fourth installment of the '' Police Story'' series. Chan reprises his role as "Kevin" Chan Ka-Kui (named "Jackie" in international releases), a Hong Kong police officer who works for the CIA to track down and arrest an illegal weapons dealer. Jet Li is a Chinese actor, producer, martial artist, and retired Wushu champion. His first non-Chinese film role was as a villain in the 1998 buddy cop action film ''Lethal Weapon 4'' with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. His first leading role in a Hollywood film was as Han Sing in the 2000 martial arts action film ''Romeo Must Die'' with Aaliyah. He has gone on to star in other international action films, including the Luc Besson-produced French films '' Kiss of the Dragon'' (2001) and '' Unleashed'' (2005). Rotten Tomatoes is an American review-aggregation website for film and television. The company was launched in August 1998 by three undergraduate students at the University of California, Berkeley: Senh Duong, Patrick Y. Lee, and Stephen Wang. Although the name "Rotten Tomatoes" connects to the practice of audiences throwing rotten tomatoes in disapproval of a poor stage performance, the original inspiration comes from a scene featuring tomatoes in the Canadian film ''Léolo'' (1992). Since January 2010, Rotten Tomatoes has been owned by Flixster, which was in turn acquired by Warner Bros in 2011. In February 2016, Rotten Tomatoes and its parent site Flixster were sold to Comcast's Fandango. Warner Bros. retained a minority stake in the merged entities, including Fandango. Hong Kong Movie Database
The Hong Kong Movie Database (HKMDB) is a bilingual (English and Chinese) website started in 1995 by Hong Kong resident Ryan Law to provide a repository for information about movies originating from Hong Kong and the people who created them. The database was initially populated with data on over 6000 films, and reviews from the defunct database hosted at egret0.stanford.edu. In subsequent years it has expanded to contain information on more than 20,000 films and nearly 100,000 people, and includes films from Taiwan and China. The Database HKMDB contains information about films, people, and companies associated with Hong Kong cinema. This includes detailed film credits for cast and crew members as well as image and portrait galleries. The site also includes user-submitted film reviews.
