The Day The Wall Came Down
''The Day the Wall Came Down'' are two sculptures by Veryl Goodnight honoring the spontaneous end of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. It depicts five horses leaping over actual pieces of the broken wall. There are two copies of the sculpture. One, sculpted in 1996, was initially installed at Stone Mountain Park near Atlanta, Georgia for the 1996 Olympic Games. It was moved in 1997 and is now exhibited on the grounds of the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas. The second, finished in 1998, was given as a gift from the United States to Germany, and is located at Clayallee near the Allied Museum in the former American sector of Berlin. Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall (german: Berliner Mauer, ) was a guarded concrete barrier that encircled West Berlin from 1961 to 1989, separating it from East Berlin and East Germany (GDR). Construction of the Berlin Wall was commenced by the government of the GDR on 13 August 1961. It included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, accompanied by a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, beds of nails and other defenses. The Eastern Bloc portrayed the Wall as protecting its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" from building a socialist state in the GDR.
