The Curse (1924 Film)
''The Curse'' (german: Der Fluch) is a 1924 Austrian drama film directed by Robert Land and starring Lilian Harvey, Oscar Beregi and Albert Heine. It was shot at the Sievering Studios. The film marked the screen debut of Lilian Harvey who would go on to become one of the top stars at the German box office during the late Weimar and early Nazi eras. Harvey was in Vienna at the time because she was appearing in a stage revue show. Plot A young Jewish woman in an Eastern European shtetl struggles to reconcile her aspirations with her duty to her family. As her lifestyle grows wilder, her mother is shocked by her immoral behaviour and commits suicide by drowning - repeating "the curse" which has haunted the family for centuries. Robert Land
Robert Land (1887–1940) was an Austrian-Jewish film director of Moravian descent. Biography Born as Robert Liebmann to a German-speaking Jewish Family in Kroměříž. Land moved to Vienna to study German literature and art history. He started directing movies in 1919. He chose the pseudonym Robert Land in order to avoid being mistaken with film critic and screenwriter Robert Liebmann (1890-1942). He made movies in Austria and Germany until 1933, when he fled to Czechoslovakia after Nazis' rise to power. Unable to find work he went to Italy in 1934, before returning to Prague a year later. He directed three movies in Czechoslovakia – ''Jana'' (1935), ''Arme kleine Inge (1936) and '' The Doll'' (1938). In 1938 he moved to Paris, where he died on 12 October 1940. He's buried at Cimetière parisien de Thiais. ''Stardom'' is a 2000 Canadian comedy-drama film directed by Denys Arcand and written by J.Jacob Potashnik and Arcand. It stars Jessica Paré and Dan Aykroyd. Hans Thimig
Hans Emil Thimig, pseudonym: Hans Werner (23 July 1900 in Vienna – 17 February 1991, also in Vienna) was an Austrian actor, film director, and stage director. Life The youngest son of the Burgtheater actor Hugo Thimig and Franziska "Fanny" Hummel, his siblings included actors Helene Thimig and Hermann Thimig. He performed without any training as a 16-year-old under the pseudonym "Hans Werner" at the Wiener Volkstheater. From 1918 to 1924 he was engaged – under his real name – at the Burgtheater, and then moved to the Theater in der Josefstadt, managed by his future brother-in-law Max Reinhardt. There, besides his father, his sister Helene Thimig and his brother Hermann Thimig also performed, so that the Viennese public used to call it the "Thimig-Theater". He soon began to direct as well, at first in the Theater in der Josefstadt, and later also in the film industry. Hans Thimig remained loyal to the Theater in der Josefstadt until 1942.
