The Csardas Princess (1934 Film)
''The Csardas Princess'' (german: Die Czardasfürstin) is a 1934 German operetta film directed by Georg Jacoby and starring Mártha Eggerth, Hans Söhnker and Paul Kemp. It is based on the 1915 operetta '' Die Csárdásfürstin'' composed by Emmerich Kálmán. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Robert Herlth and Walter Röhrig. A separate French-language version ''Princesse Czardas'' was also produced. In 1951 Jacoby remade the film starring his wife Marika Rökk. Operetta Films
Operetta films (German: Operettenfilm) are a genre of musical films associated with, but not exclusive to, German language cinema. The genre began in the late 1920s, but its roots stretch back into the tradition of nineteenth century Viennese operettas. Although some silent films had based their plots on stage operettas, the genre was largely a result of the switch from silent to sound films. The 1929 film ''Melody of the Heart'', made by the German studio UFA, is credited as being the first "Operetta film". It had been intended as a silent film, but the dramatic arrival of sound forced its production to be switched. Its combination of music and dancing proved to be a successful formula, and it was followed by many similar films. During the 1930s the trend spread to Britain, where a number of Operetta films were made (often in co-productions with German or Austrian studios), France and the United States. Olga Engl (30 May 1871 – 21 September 1946) was an Austrian-German stage and motion picture actress who appeared in nearly 200 films. Biography Engl was privately educated in an Ursuline monastery and began her acting career at the Prague Conservatory. In August 1887 she made her stage début as Bertha in the play ''Die Verschwörung des Fiesco zu Genua'' in her home town. In 1888, she moved to the city of Danzig and performed in the theatre from 1889 to 1892 then briefly moved to Berlin. From 1892 to 1895 she performed with the court theatre in Munich and from 1895 to 1897 in Hamburg at the Thalia Theater, and from 1897 in Hanover. Marina Von Ditmar
Marina von Ditmar (30 October 1914 – 3 September 2014) was a German film actress born in Saint Petersburg of Baltic German descent. After moving to Germany she studied acting under Lucie Höflich and Ilka Grüning. Her first roles were performed at the ''Schauspielhaus'', Bremen, and the Altes Theater (Leipzig). In 1937, she started with the ensemble at the ''Volksbühne'', Berlin. By 1940 she was a permanent actress at this theatre. Her first big movie success came in the operetta '' The Csardas Princess'' in 1934, alongside Hans Söhnker. In 1943, she starred with Hans Albers in '' Münchhausen'' with great commercial and critical success. Ida Wüst
Ida Wüst (; 10 October 1884 – 4 October 1958) was a German stage and film actress whose career was prominent in the 1920s and 1930s with Universum Film AG (UFA). Life and career Little is known about Ida Wüst's early childhood. She discovered early the world of theater, and decided to make it her career. After attending secondary school in Frankfurt am Main, Wüst took acting lessons from Thessa Klinghammer and at the age of 16 received her first engagement at the StadtTheatre of Colmar, and further stage productions in Bromberg, and in 1904 performed extensively in Leipzig. In 1907 she became a member of the ensemble of the Lessing-Theater in Berlin, where she performed roles in ''Hosenrollen'' (roles in which women impersonate men in trousers), and comedies and became sought after actress. Paul Hörbiger
Paul Hörbiger (29 April 1894 – 5 March 1981) was an Austrian theatre and film actor. Life and work Paul Hörbiger was born in the Hungarian capital Budapest, then part of Austria-Hungary, the son of engineer Hanns Hörbiger, founder of the ''Welteislehre'' cosmological concept, and elder brother of actor Attila Hörbiger. In 1902, the family returned to Vienna, while Paul attended the '' gymnasium'' (high school) at St. Paul's Abbey in Carinthia. Having obtained his ''Matura'' degree, he served in a mountain artillery regiment of the Austro-Hungarian Army in World War I, discharged in 1918 with the rank of an ''Oberleutnant''.
