''The Count of Monte Cristo'' is an American old-time radio adventure program. It was broadcast on the Don Lee Network on the West Coast in the 1944-1945 season and on the Mutual Broadcasting System December 19, 1946 - January 1, 1952. Format Derived from the novel ''The Count of Monte Cristo'' by Alexandre Dumas, the program focused on the adventures of Edmond Dantes, who was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted on a false accusation of treason. Dantes escaped from prison and fought corruption in 18th-century France. The episodes on the Don Lee Network were sponsored by Peralto Wines. Personnel Carleton Young had the title role. Rene Michon (the count's "faithful manservant") was portrayed first by Ferdinand Munier and later by Parley Baer. ''The Count of Monte Cristo'' is a 1956 British cult swashbuckler adventure television series produced by ITC Entertainment/ TPA and adapted very loosely from the 1844 novel by Alexandre Dumas by Sidney Marshall. It premiered in the UK in early 1956 and ran for 39 thirty-minute episodes dramatizing the continuing adventures of Edmond Dantès, the self-styled Count of Monte Cristo, during the reign of Louis Philippe I d'Orléans, King of the French from 1830 to 1848. The first twelve episodes were filmed in the United States, at the Hal Roach studios, with the rest being filmed at ITC's traditional home of Elstree. ITC produced a film based on the same source-material, ''The Count of Monte-Cristo'', in 1975. Jay Novello (born Michael Romano, August 22, 1904 – September 2, 1982) was an American radio, film, and television character actor. Early life Novello was born in Chicago to Joseph Romano and Maria (Salemme) Romano. He had three siblings: John, Joseph, and Theresa (later Mrs. Rizzo). Howard Terbell McNear (January 27, 1905 – January 3, 1969) was an American stage, screen, and radio character actor. McNear is best remembered as the original voice of Doc Adams in the radio version of ''Gunsmoke'' and as Floyd Lawson, the barber on ''The Andy Griffith Show'' (1961–1967). Career McNear studied at the Oatman School of Theater and later joined a stock company in San Diego. John Dehner (DAY-ner) (born John Dehner Forkum, also credited Dehner Forkum; November 23, 1915February 4, 1992) was an American stage, radio, film, and television actor. From the late 1930s to the late 1980s, he amassed a long list of performance credits, often in roles as sophisticated con men, shady authority figures, and other smooth-talking villains. His credits just in feature films, televised series, and in made-for-TV movies number almost 300 productions. ''The Count of Monte Cristo'' is a British 12-part dramatization of Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel of the same name. It was made by the BBC and was screened in the autumn of 1964. The series starred Alan Badel in the title role. As well as being the only BBC version, the serial survived the corporation's junking policy intact and is available on DVD.
