''The Californian'' was the first California newspaper. History ''The Californian'' was first published in Monterey, California on August 15, 1846, by Alcalde Walter Colton and his friend Robert B. Semple, from a well-used Ramage printing press that Agustín V. ''The Californian'' was a San Francisco literary newspaper published weekly from May 28, 1864 until February 1, 1868. History ''The Californian'' was started in May 1864 by publishers P.J. Charles Henry "Inigo" Webb was the first editor, and Fitz Hugh Ludlow was one of the first contributors. Bret Harte was an editor, and Mark Twain was hired at a salary of $50 per month. Harte contributed articles as well, and the periodical jumped to the fore among its competitors in the San Francisco Bay Area including ''the Golden Era''. The Californian (Temecula)
The ''North County Times'' was a local newspaper in San Diego's North County. It was headquartered in Escondido. The final publisher was Peter York. It was formed in 1995 from the merger of the ''North County Blade-Citizen'' of Oceanside (founded 1929) and the '' Escondido Times-Advocate'' (founded 1909) by Howard Publications. Beginning in 1997, the Times also published ''The Californian'' in Temecula, located in southwest Riverside County. The newspaper was published with three local editions including ''The Californian''. Lee Enterprises acquired Howard in 2002. From 2008 through 2011, the paper laid off dozens of staff members, including at least a third of its editorial/newsroom staff. ''The Bakersfield Californian'' is a daily newspaper serving Bakersfield, California and surrounding Kern County in the state's San Joaquin Valley. History ''The Bakersfield Californian'' is the direct descendant of Kern County's first newspaper, ''The Weekly Courier'', which was first published on Aug. 18, 1866, in Havilah, California. At that time, Havilah, a small mining town about 50 miles northeast of the present site of Bakersfield, was the center of the 1864 gold rush, which brought the first major population influx to Kern County. The newspaper's name was later changed to ''The Havilah Weekly Courier''. As the mineral wealth of the area became depleted and the population moved southward toward Bakersfield, the newspaper also moved to Bakersfield in 1872, becoming ''The Kern County Weekly Courier''.
