List of novels by Francis Brett Young Works ''Undergrowth'' (1913) ''Undergrowth'' is co-written with his brother Eric. It marked the debut for Francis who was later to emerge as one of the most popular British writers of the interwar years. The story is based on the construction of the Elan Valley Reservoirs, a subject that he later returned to more successfully in ''The House Under the Water'' in 1932. ''Undergrowth'' was published in 1913 by Martin Secker. A young English engineer travels to Wales to take over the construction of a dam, after the mysterious disappearance of his predecessor. ''Deep Sea'' (1914) ''Deep Sea'' is set in a West Country fishing town. Francis Brett Young
Francis Brett Young (29 June 1884 – 28 March 1954) was an English novelist, poet, playwright, composer, doctor and soldier. Life Francis Brett Young was born in Halesowen, Worcestershire. He received his early education at Iona, a private school in Sutton Coldfield. His father, Thomas Brett Young, was a doctor and his mother also came from a medical family, so it was natural that he go to the school for the sons of doctors, Epsom College. He was there when, at fourteen, he suffered the death of his beloved mother. He later went on to train at the University of Birmingham to become a qualified physician. He met his future wife, Jessie Hankinson, while he was lodging at Edgbaston in Birmingham and she was training at Anstey College of Physical Education, then housed in nearby The Leasowes (the former home of William Shenstone, the author he most admired).
