The Best Of M People
''The Best of M People'' is the first greatest hits album by English dance music band M People, released in 1998. The album contains seventeen tracks, including ten UK top 10 hits and three new songs: "Testify (M People song), Testify", "Dreaming (M People song), Dreaming" (which both reached the UK top 20) and a cover version of The Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes". A limited edition was released, including a bonus live album with eight tracks recorded at the ''Later... with Jools Holland'' M People special, plus enhanced content. The album is now available in the United States through iTunes. There was also an advanced sampler called ''Classic'' and a Sales promotion, promotional version containing the same content as the bonus live disc but with more sound excerpts and full videos. M People
M People (stylised as ''M''People) is an English dance music band that formed in 1990 and achieved success throughout most of the 1990s. The name M People is taken from the first letter of the first name of band member Mike Pickering, who formed the group. In December 2016, ''Billboard'' magazine ranked them as the 83rd most successful dance act of all time. M People have sold over 11 million records worldwide Career Formation Pickering had been a member of Factory Records dance act Quando Quango, but became more noted as one of the original DJs at The Haçienda. Paul Heard was a member of acid jazz band Ace of Clubs, and Shovell had previously been in the collective Natural Life. Heather Small
Heather Margarita Small (born 20 January 1965) is a British soul singer and former lead vocalist of the band M People. Her subsequent debut solo studio album, ''Proud'', was released in 2000. Career 1987–1998: Hot House and M People Small was born and raised on a council estate in Ladbroke Grove, West London. She joined her first group, Hot House, as a singer while she was still a teenager. She was the studio singer voice of the re-recorded version of "Ride on Time" by Black Box. She had a chance meeting with Manchester DJ, Mike Pickering, formerly of Quando Quango, which led to sales of over 10 million albums worldwide with the group M People. "Colour My Life" is a song by British band M People, released as the second single from their first album, '' Northern Soul'' (1991). It was written by band members Mike Pickering and Paul Heard. The single was originally released in May 1991 and was given a full release on 24 February 1992. It peaked at number thirty five on the UK Singles Chart and number 13 on the UK Dance Singles Chart. "Just for You" is the fifteenth overall single from British band M People. It is the lead single from their fourth album, ''Fresco'' (1997). Written by Mike Pickering, Paul Heard and Heather Small. Produced by M People. It was released on 22 September 1997. The song peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart. Composition The intro to the song is led by an orchestral string movement, soon combined with a slow strummy guitar and Heather's vocals. "Just for You" is a love song with Heather singing about the exultations of love and the lengths that she would go to always be there; to support, to sacrifice and to guide singing the insistent refrain at the end of every line of the verses: "Just for You". Bizarre Fruit II
''Bizarre Fruit II'' is a reissued and expanded version of M People's 1994 '' Bizarre Fruit'' album, with the single versions of " Search for the Hero" and "Love Rendezvous" in place of the originals, and including the band's cover of the Small Faces' "Itchycoo Park". It was initially released as a limited edition with a bonus ''Live and Remixed'' CD or cassette. The ''Live and Remixed'' disc contains live versions of tracks from ''Bizarre Fruit'' and M People's previous two albums, '' Northern Soul'' and ''Elegant Slumming''. The live tracks were recorded at GMEX in Manchester on 16 December 1994, except " Search for the Hero" which was recorded at Grosse Freiheit in Hamburg on 26 February 1995. Ronnie Lane
Ronald Frederick Lane (1 April 1946 – 4 June 1997) was an English musician and songwriter who is best known as the bass guitarist and founding member of Small Faces (1965–69) and subsequently Faces (1969–73). Lane formed Small Faces in 1965 after meeting Steve Marriott, with whom he subsquently wrote many of their hit singles including " All or Nothing", "Itchycoo Park" and " Lazy Sunday". After Marriott left Small Faces in 1968, bandmembers Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenny Jones were joined by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood to form Faces. Like Small Faces, the band achieved critical and commercial success. Lane quit the Faces in 1973 and subsequently collaborated with other musicians, leading his own bands and pursuing a solo career. In 1977, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He was supported by charity projects and financial contributions from friends, former bandmates and fans. Steve Marriott
Stephen Peter Marriott (30 January 1947 – 20 April 1991) was an English guitarist, singer and songwriter. He co-founded and played in the rock bands Small Faces and Humble Pie, in a career spanning over two decades. Marriott was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of Small Faces. In Britain, Marriott became a popular, often-photographed mod style icon. Marriott was influenced by musicians such as: Miles Davis, Buddy Holly, Booker T & the MG's, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters and Bobby Bland. In his later life Marriott became distant with the music industry and turned away from major record labels, remaining in relative obscurity. He returned to his music roots, playing in pubs and clubs around London and Essex. Marriott died on 20 April 1991 when a fire, which was thought to have been caused by a cigarette, swept through his 16th-century home in Arkesden, Essex. Itchycoo Park
"Itchycoo Park" is a song written by Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, first recorded by their group, the Small Faces. Largely written by Lane, it was one of the first music recordings to feature flanging, an effect at that time made possible by electro-mechanical processes. The location and etymology of the titular park has long been debated; many claiming it to be Little Ilford Park in Manor Park, East London, Valentine's Park in Ilford or Wanstead Flats in Wanstead, East London. The single was not featured on any of their UK albums, but was however featured on the North American release ''There Are But Four Small Faces''. Elegant Slumming
''Elegant Slumming'' is the second album by the British dance band M People. It was released on 4 October 1993 charting and peaking at number 2 on the UK Album Chart and spent 87 weeks in the Top 75. It re-entered the chart three times in October 1996 and March and September 1997. Its overall sales stand at 759,000 as of September 2020. The four singles released from the album were all UK Top 10 hits: "One Night in Heaven" (#6) and " Moving on Up" (#2), as well as a cover version of the Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garrett song "Don't Look Any Further", which reached No. 9 in the UK. A fourth hit, "Renaissance", reached No. 5 in the same chart. The US version was released in 1994 in a separate deal on the Epic label, and replaces 3 tracks with 3 hits from their debut album '' Northern Soul'', which did not have a US release.
