The Base (shopping Centre)
The Base is a regional shopping centre located in Te Rapa, in the New Zealand city of Hamilton. The centre consists of the original outdoor strip mall, and the more recent Te Awa enclosed shopping mall. History The 30-hectare block of land that The Base sits on traditionally belonged to Waikato-Tainui. It was taken prior to World War II by the Crown under the Public Works Act for defence purposes, and became the Te Rapa Air Force Base (hence the name), which eventually closed in 1992. The land came back to the tribe in 1995 as part of the Waikato-Tainui Raupatu (land confiscation) settlement. It was put into what is known as Pōtatau Te Wherowhero title (named after the first Māori king), which means it can never be sold or alienated. In 2002 Tainui Group Holdings announced that they would build a $50 million retail development that would eventually cover over 60,000 square metres of retail and commercial space. Te Rapa Railway Station
Rotokauri railway station (formerly Te Rapa railway station), also known as The Hub, is a railway station, park and ride, and bus station in north Hamilton, New Zealand serving Rotokauri and Te Rapa. Located on the North Island Main Trunk, it was previously a flag station, and was closed in January 1971. It reopened as an integrated transport hub in 2021 as part of Te Huia services between Hamilton and Papakura. Services started on 6 April 2021. Hamilton ( mi, Kirikiriroa) is an inland city in the North Island of New Zealand. Located on the banks of the Waikato River, it is the seat and most populous city of the Waikato region. With a territorial population of , it is the country's fourth most-populous city. Waikato Tainui
Waikato Tainui, Waikato or Tainui is a group of Māori ''iwi'' based in Waikato Region, in the western central region of New Zealand's North Island. It is part of the larger Tainui confederation of Polynesian settlers who arrived to New Zealand on the Tainui ''waka'' (migration canoe). The tribe is named after the Waikato River, which plays a large part in its history and culture. Pōtatau Te Wherowhero, the first Māori king, was a member of the Waikato hapu (sub-tribe) of Ngāti Mahuta, and his descendants have succeeded him. The king movement is based at Tūrangawaewae ''marae'' (meeting place) in Ngāruawāhia. The Waikato-Tainui iwi comprises 33 hapū (sub-tribes) and 65 marae (family groupings).
