''The Barrier'' ( bg, Бариерата, translit. Barierata) is a 1979 Bulgarian drama film directed by Christo Christov. It was entered into the 11th Moscow International Film Festival where it won the Silver Prize. Christo Christov ( bg, Христо Христов; 11 April 1926 – 16 April 2007) was a Bulgarian film director and screenwriter. He directed 19 films between 1969 and 1997. In 1973 he was a member of the jury at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival. His 1976 film ''Cyclops'' was entered into the 27th Berlin International Film Festival. His 1979 film ''The Barrier'' won the Silver Prize at the 11th Moscow International Film Festival. In 1981 his film '' The Truck'' was entered into the 31st Berlin International Film Festival. His 1985 film ''Reference'' was entered into the 14th Moscow International Film Festival. Bulgaria has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1970. The award is handed out annually by the United States-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature length motion picture produced outside the U.S. that contains primarily non-English language dialogue. It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. Since 1970, Bulgaria has submitted twenty-eight films for consideration. No Bulgarian film has yet been nominated for an Oscar, although their 2009 submission was shortlisted for the 2010 Best Foreign Language Film award. This is a list of submissions to the 52nd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. For the 52nd Academy Awards, twenty-three films were submitted in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The People's Republic of China submitted a film for the first time.
