Arthur Higgins
Arthur Embery Higgins (25 October 189122 September 1963) was a pioneering Australian cinematographer known for his use of trick photography during the silent era. His ongoing collaborations with director Raymond Longford include ''The Sentimental Bloke'' (1919) and '' The Blue Mountains Mystery'' (1921). He briefly turned to directing with '' Odds On'' (1928) however returned to cinematography in 1931 for the remainder of his career. Biography Arthur Higgins was born in Glebe, Hobart, Tasmania in 1891. He was the youngest of three brothers, Ernest and Tasman. From a young age, Arthur was introduced to photography and projection by his eldest brother, Ernest. In 1900, Ernest rigged up a projector from his father's shop's balcony with a screen on a building across the street. Eventually Ernest's fascination with photography and cinema took him to Sydney where he found work at Cosens Spencer filming newsreels and travelogues. Tasman Higgins (8 April 1888 – 4 June 1953) was an Australian cinematographer during the early days of the Australian film industry, working for such directors as Charles Chauvel, Raymond Longford, Beaumont Smith, Louise Lovely and Rupert Kathner. He was the brother of Arthur and Ernest Higgins, with whom he occasionally collaborated. His most notable association was with Charles Chauvel, starting with ''In the Wake of the Bounty'' (1933), which was Errol Flynn's first film and involved three months of location filming on Pitcairn Island. Raymond Longford (born John Walter Hollis Longford, 23 September 18782 April 1959) was a prolific Australian film director, writer, producer and actor during the silent era. Longford was a major director of the silent film era of the Australian cinema. He formed a production team with Lottie Lyell. His contributions to Australian cinema with his ongoing collaborations with Lyell, including ''The Sentimental Bloke'' (1919) and '' The Blue Mountains Mystery'' (1921), prompted the Australian Film Institute's AFI Raymond Longford Award, inaugurated in 1968, to be named in his honour. Pat Twohill
Edmund Patrick Twohill (22 October 1915 – 7 October 1989) was a New Zealand actor and radio announcer who worked extensively in Australian film, radio and theatre. He is best known for his role in the classic war film in ''Forty Thousand Horsemen'' (1940). After making the film he worked in England for two years, touring in a production of '' Idiot's Delight'', before returning to Australia and working steadily as a radio and newsreel announcer, particularly for Cinesound Productions. He was married to Thora Lumsdaine, a radio actor and the only child of songwriter and radio star, Jack Lumsdaine. They had five children together. The ''Labor Daily'' was a Sydney-based journal/newspaper of the early to mid 20th century. An organ of the Australian Labor Party, it was published in Sydney by Stanley Roy Wasson after the ailing ''Daily Mail'' was absorbed by Labor Papers Ltd, who began publication under that name on 6 January 1922 with the strong support of Albert Willis and the Miners' Federation. Willis was managing director 1926–1931 and chairman 1924–1930 and one of the most powerful political figures in the state. After a few weeks the paper's name was changed to the ''Labor Daily'' and was a supporter of Lang Labor. In 1929 receivers sold '' Beckett's Budget'' to Labor Daily Ltd. ''Show Business'' is a 1938 Australian film musical directed by A. R. Harwood and starring Bert Matthews. It is considered a 'substantially lost' film, with only rushes from a single minor scene left. Plot Two brothers, Bill and Wally Winter, become infatuated with a gold digger, Nina Bellamy. She persuades them to ask their wealthy father, Sir James, for £10,000 so Bill can produce a stage show and Wally a movie, both starring Nina. Sir James discovers the truth about Nina and gives his son the money, provided they leave town in secret for one month to write their shows and that they only use new talent. Bill goes to a country town and discovers a local amateur group. He buys their show and brings it to the city, where it is a big success.
