''The Audience's Listening'' is the debut studio album by Cut Chemist, released on Warner Bros. Records on July 11, 2006. It features guest appearances from Hymnal, Edan, Mr. Lif, and Thes One. Production After leaving Jurassic 5 in 2004, Cut Chemist spent 18 months working exclusively on the album, which he had already been working on for 2 years. He spent almost a year clearing samples. Critical reception At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 79% based on 15 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". David Jeffries of AllMusic gave the album 3.5 stars out of 5 and described it as "a well-crafted, highly enjoyable effort that overcomes the 'all samples cleared' challenge all big-label turntablist albums must face." Cut Chemist
Lucas MacFadden (born October 4, 1972), better known as Cut Chemist, is an American DJ and record producer. He is a former member of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli. He has collaborated with DJ Shadow on a number of projects. Early life Cut Chemist graduated from University of California, Los Angeles in 1997. Cut Chemist also attended Glendale Community College and took several drawing and life drawing classes in the early 1990's. Career Cut Chemist became known through the Los Angeles-based rap group Unity Committee. The group merged with another group, Rebels of Rhythm, to form Jurassic 5. In 2004, Cut Chemist released ''The Litmus Test'', which included his solo tracks, remixes, and Jurassic 5 tracks. He left Jurassic 5 in 2004. In a 2006 interview with ''Billboard'', he stated that he had left the group in order to get his solo album finished. Christopher Cesar Portugal (born October 18, 1977), best known as Thes One, is one half of hip hop duo People Under the Stairs, serving as a vocalist/ MC, producer, engineer and business manager. He has produced and engineered 8 albums for People Under the Stairs that have sold in excess of 100,000 units in the U.S. alone since 2000, have appeared on the U.S. and International ''Billboard'' charts numerous times, as well as numerous remixes and singles for other artists across the globe with numerous appearances as guest vocalist. Edan Portnoy (born 1978), better known as Edan, is an American hip hop artist from Rockville, Maryland. Early life Born to middle-class parents who immigrated from Israel, Portnoy grew up in Rockville, Maryland. He is Jewish. In high school, he bought his first turntables and started mixing beats.
