''The Alibi'' (French: ''L'Alibi'') is a 1937 French mystery film directed by Pierre Chenal and starring Erich von Stroheim, Albert Préjean and Jany Holt. The film was shot at the Billancourt Studios and Epinay Studios in Paris. Location shooting took place at Trilport on the River Seine. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Eugène Lourié and Serge Piménoff The film was well received by critics on its release.Andrew p.134 It was released in the United States in April 1939 by Columbia Pictures. Pierre Chenal
Pierre Chenal (; 5 December 1904 – 23 December 1990) was a French director and screenwriter who flourished in the 1930s. He was married to Czech-born French film actress Florence Marly from 1937 to 1955. Work Chenal was best known for film noir thrillers such as the 1937 film '' L'Alibi'', where he worked with Erich von Stroheim and Louis Jouvet. In 1939 he made ''Le Dernier Tournant'', the first of many film treatments of James M. Cain's celebrated novel, '' The Postman Always Rings Twice''. Chenal was Jewish and was forced in 1942 to flee occupied France with his wife, Czech actress Florence Marly, for South America. Location shooting is the shooting of a film or television production in a real-world setting rather than a sound stage or backlot. The location may be interior or exterior. Génia (stylized as GéNIA; born in Ukrainian SSR) is a London-based virtuoso concert pianist and composer. Génia was born in Ukraine into the Horowitz family of musicians and scientists. Her repertoire ranges from classical music to contemporary works and her own compositions. Education Génia started her studies at the age of four with her great-grandmother, the pianist and pedagogue Regina Horowitz (sister of pianist Vladimir Horowitz and wife of the Soviet economist Evsei Liberman). Jules Eugène Louis Jouvet (24 December 1887 – 16 August 1951) was a French actor, theatre director and filmmaker. Early life Jouvet was born in Crozon. He had a stutter as a young man and originally trained as a pharmacist. Eugène Lourié (russian: Евгений Лурье; 8 April 1903 – 26 May 1991) was a French film director, art director, production designer, set designer and screenwriter who was known for his collaborations with Jean Renoir and for his 1950s science fiction movies.
