The Affair (1965 Film)
"The Affair" is a 1965 Australian television play based on the novel by C. P. Snow. It starred Roger Climpson, Richard Meikle and Anne Haddy and aired on the ABC as part of ''Wednesday Theatre''. Australian TV drama was relatively rare at the time. Plot A young Cambridge scientist, Donald Howard, introvertive and unpopular, is accused of fraud and dismissed from his fellowship. The twenty fellows attempt to dismiss their feelings of unease by calling him guilty. His wife campaigns for him, splitting the college into two factions, one which sticks by the original verdict the other which seeks to re-try him. Atholl Fleming
Atholl Fleming MBE (6 December 1894 – 6 May 1972) was a British actor and an Australian radio personality. Early life He was the third of nine children of the Rev R. S. Fleming, a Scottish Baptist minister of Pitlochry and later Beckenham in Kent. After a fall as a child, he became deaf in his right ear. He was educated at the City of London School. He saw fighting in France during World War I with the Royal West Kent Regiment, notably the Battle of the Somme, and was wounded three times – a shrapnel wound to the head, a bayonet wound in the knee and gas injuries, which left him with a cough for the rest of his life. He was awarded the Freedom of the City of London. Career After the War, he abandoned a career with the Bank of England for the stage, appearing in a number of Whitehall farces and dramas on BBC television at Alexandra Palace. The Dreyfus affair (french: affaire Dreyfus, ) was a political scandal that divided the French Third Republic from 1894 until its resolution in 1906. "L'Affaire", as it is known in French, has come to symbolise modern injustice in the Francophone world, and it remains one of the most notable examples of a complex miscarriage of justice and antisemitism. The role played by the press and public opinion proved influential in the conflict. The scandal began in December 1894 when Captain Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason. Dreyfus was a 35-year-old Alsatian French artillery officer of Jewish descent. Francis Hewat Taylor (born 22 February 1920 - Deceased) was a Scottish-born Australia actor known for his long running portrayal of Sgt. Andrew "Scotty" Macleod in the television series ''Division 4''. He appeared in every one of the show's 301 episodes becoming a well known television personality. Early life Taylor was born in Kirkhill in Scotland and was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the Scottish School of Drama. ''The Affair'' is the eighth book in C. P. Snow's ''Strangers and Brothers'' series. The events return to the Cambridge college of ''The Masters''. It is once again narrated by Lewis Eliot. Plot synopsis An unpopular academic, Dr Donald Howard, is dismissed from the college for fraud. Doubt soon arises as to the evidence and the fellows are divided into two camps, those who are reluctant to reopen the case and others who override the board. Eliot handles the defence in the proceedings. Reception In a 1960 book review in ''Kirkus Reviews'' called the book " heone in which Mr. Snow's special talents have their best application...
