''The Academy of Muses'' ( es, La academia de las musas, links=no) is a 2015 Spanish film directed, written, edited, and lensed by José Luis GuerÃn blending documentary and comedy elements. Plot The plot follows an ethically dubious Italian professor of literature at the University of Barcelona and the interactions with his female students. Cast Production The film is a GuerÃn PC and Los Films de Orfeo production. It was shot with a non-professional cast of actors, featuring dialogue in Catalan, Italian, Spanish, and Sard. Release The film made its world premiere in August 2015 at the 68th Locarno Film Festival. It also screened at the Seville European Film Festival in November 2015. It was theatrically released in Spain on 1 January 2006. José Luis GuerÃn
José Luis GuerÃn (born 1960) is a Spanish filmmaker and educator known for ''Train of Shadows'' (1997), ' (2001), and ''The Academy of Muses'' (2015). Style and influences As a young cinephile, GuerÃn attended many film screenings, made films on Super 8 and 16mm and sought out and befriended many of the filmmakers he admired, including Robert Bresson, Raoul Ruiz and Philippe Garrel. GuerÃn's films are often described as being influenced by the Lumière Brothers, Howard Hawks, YasujirÅ Ozu and John Ford (GuerÃn went so far as to shoot a film in Lake Isle of Innisfree, Innisfree, the setting of Ford's ''The Quiet Man''). GuerÃn is known for his meditative and intellectually curious work in both documentary and narrative filmmaking.
