The Abyss (musical Project)
The Abyss was a Swedish black metal side project by members of the death metal band Hypocrisy. They were active from 1994 to 1998 and recorded two albums. Black Metal
Black metal is an extreme metal, extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Common traits include Tempo#Beats per minute, fast tempos, a Screaming (music)#Black metal, shrieking vocal style, heavily distorted Electric guitar, guitars played with tremolo picking, raw (Lo-fi music, lo-fi) recording, unconventional song structures, and an emphasis on atmosphere. Artists often appear in corpse paint and adopt pseudonyms. During the 1980s, several thrash metal and death metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. Side Project
In popular music, a side project is a project undertaken by one or more people already known for their involvement in another band. It can also be an artist or a band temporarily switching to a different style. Usually these projects emphasize a different aspect of that person's or that band's musical interests that they feel they cannot explore within the boundaries established by their main project. Side projects can later become full-time endeavours, but should not be confused with quitting a band for a solo career or another band. Peter Hartlaub of ''San Francisco Chronicle'' called the solo side project "the biggest longshot bet in mainstream music". Death metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Hypocrisy (band)
Hypocrisy is a Swedish death metal band formed in October 1991 in Ludvika by Peter Tägtgren. History After spending three years in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1990, founder Peter Tägtgren returned to his homeland of Sweden, to form his own band. Hypocrisy's early releases were noted as being well-executed death metal, but panned for not being particularly innovative. That criticism waned as the band matured, cultivating a more distinctive sound as well as employing an introspective lyrical approach. Later releases have a more atmospheric sound, with lyrical exploration of aliens and abduction experiences. Tägtgren's experience as a producer may also have led to the band's change in musical direction, as he is more closely involved with many other bands while producing their albums. Alf Peter Tägtgren (born 3 June 1970) is a Swedish musician, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. He is the founder, main songwriter, lead vocalist, and guitarist of death metal band Hypocrisy as well as the industrial metal band Pain in which he is the only member. He is also the owner of ''The Abyss'' recording studio and the co-founder of Lindemann, a music project between Tägtgren and Rammstein vocalist Till Lindemann. Tägtgren left Lindemann in 2020. Music career Tägtgren started playing drums at the age of nine and later learned to play guitar, bass and keyboard. After Tägtgren's first band Conquest disbanded, he emigrated to the United States. There, he became part of the death metal scene after participating in practice sessions with Malevolent Creation's guitarist, Phil Fasciana. Bathory (band)
Bathory was a Swedish black metal band formed in Vällingby in March 1983. Eponymously named after the Hungarian countess Elizabeth Báthory, they are often considered pioneers of black metal (alongside Venom and Mercyful Fate) and viking metal. The 1998 book '' Lords of Chaos'' described Bathory's first four albums as "the blueprint for Scandinavian black metal." Acts influenced by their early records include Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Immortal, Emperor, Dark Funeral, Enslaved, Marduk, Moonsorrow and Dimmu Borgir.
