''That's the Way Love Goes'' is the thirty-eighth studio album by the American country music singer Merle Haggard backed by The Strangers, released in 1983. Background Haggard had loved Lefty Frizzell's " That's the Way Love Goes" since he first heard the song and tried recording it towards the end of his time with Capitol Records in the mid-1970s with unsatisfactory results. That version, which can be found on the box set ''Hag: The Studio Recordings 1969-1976'', is more lighthearted and whimsical than the one Haggard recorded in 1983. The song topped the ''Billboard'' country singles chart, as did "Someday When Things Are Good," a song co-written by Haggard and his wife Leona Williams. It also proved to be prophetic, as the couple divorced that year. The Strangers (American Band)
The Strangers were an American country band that formed in 1966 in Bakersfield, California. They mainly served as the backup band for singer-songwriter Merle Haggard, who named them after his first hit single " (My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers". In addition to serving as his backing band, members of the Strangers also produced many of Haggard's records, sang lead vocals on select tracks, and co-wrote many of Haggard's songs with him, including the No. 1 singles, "Okie From Muskogee" and "I Always Get Lucky with You". From 1969 to 1973, they issued several records independent of Haggard, released on Capitol Records, and even had their own Top 10 hit single called "Street Singer" on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart. Recording and composition Produced by Haggard and his mentors Fuzzy Owen and Lewis Talley, the tracks for ''Going Where The Lonely Go'' were recorded during the same two-day marathon recording session that produced the songs for Haggard's previous 1982 album '' Big City''. Like its predecessor, it peaked at number 3 on the ''Billboard'' country albums chart. Haggard composed five of the ten songs on the LP, including the chart topping title track. John Prine
John Edward Prine (; October 10, 1946 – April 7, 2020) was an American singer-songwriter of country-folk music. He was active as a composer, recording artist, live performer, and occasional actor from the early 1970s until his death. He was known for an often humorous style of original music that has elements of protest and social commentary. Born and raised in Maywood, Illinois, Prine learned to play the guitar at age 14. He attended classes at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. After serving in West Germany with the U.S. Army, he returned to Chicago in the late 1960s, where he worked as a mailman, writing and singing songs first as a hobby and then as a club performer. A member of Chicago's folk revival, a laudatory review by critic Roger Ebert built Prine's popularity.
