Thalia, Virginia
Thalia is a residential neighborhood in the northeastern area of the independent city of Virginia Beach in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. History Thalia was originally an unincorporated community in Princess Anne County. It was the location of Summerville Plantation, home of wealthy Scottish merchant George F. McIntosh (1768–1863), whose business was based in Norfolk. During World War II, Camp Ashby, a U.S. Army prisoner-of-war camp, was located at Thalia. The area underwent extensive residential development after the war. In 1963, by mutual consent, the county was consolidated with the resort city of Virginia Beach, forming one of Virginia's largest cities. Modern community The community is home to Fire Department No. 7, Thalia Elementary School, and Loehmann's Plaza, a shopping center. Princess Anne County, Virginia
County of Princess Anne is a former county in the British Colony of Virginia and the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States, first incorporated in 1691. The county was merged into the city of Virginia Beach on January 1, 1963, ceasing to exist. Lynnhaven River
The Lynnhaven River is a tidal estuary located in the independent city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the United States, and flows into the Chesapeake Bay west of Cape Henry at Lynnhaven Inlet, beyond which is Lynnhaven Roads. Virginia Beach Boulevard
Virginia Beach Boulevard is a major connector highway which carries U.S. Route 58 most of its length and extends from the downtown area of Norfolk to the Oceanfront area of Virginia Beach, passing through the newly developed New Urbanist Town Center development of the latter as it links the two independent cities in the South Hampton Roads subregion of the Hampton Roads region in southeastern Virginia. Virginia Beach Town Center is a group of offices, hotels, stores, and restaurants in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Princess Anne High School
Princess Anne High School (PAHS) is one of 11 high schools in the Virginia Beach City Public School System. Opened in 1954, it is the oldest remaining high school in Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States. The school is named after the now extinct Princess Anne County, Virginia (itself named after the British Royal, Queen Anne, titled at the time and prior to ascension, Princess of Denmark) which was annexed with the founding of Virginia Beach. Princess Anne High School is slated to be demolished following the construction of a replacement building. The construction is anticipated to begin in 2023 with the new building being open in 2028. Camp Ashby (Virginia)
Camp Ashby in the Thalia community of Princess Anne County, Virginia was the largest Prisoner of War camp in South Hampton Roads during World War II. It housed 6,000 German troops, many of Adolf Hitler's Afrika Corps who had been captured in North Africa during the closing years of World War II. Camp Ashby was erected quickly in 1942 on land leased from the state. At the time, the property's dominant feature was the Tidewater Victory Memorial Hospital, a tuberculosis sanitarium at Virginia Beach Boulevard and Thalia Road. That building became the camp's headquarters. The camp's low-slung barracks were scattered across of woods and field north of the present main branch of the Virginia Beach Central Library and Loehman's Plaza shopping center. Summerville Plantation
Summerville Plantation was a farm in northwestern Chesterfield County, Virginia. Established around the 1760s by Robert Moseley, Summerville was home to many prominent Chesterfield families until its decay following the American Civil War. In the late 1900s the tract was built over by new housing developments. The Summerville site was originally part of a 17,653-acre tract granted by the British crown to John Tullit. From 1705 to 1760, the tract was owned by numerous people with the names of Page, Digges, Cary, Price, and Lacy. In 1760, the original 200-acre parcel was bought by Robert Moseley (1732–1804) and Magdalene Guerrant Moseley (1740–1826), a young couple, from Thomas Lacy for 65 pounds. Two additional purchases in 1762 and 1763 of 228 and 100 acres, respectively, brought the total acreage of the farm to 528 acres.
