Texas State Highway 97
State Highway 97 (SH 97) is a state highway running from Cotulla to Waelder in the U.S. state of Texas. History SH 97 was designated on July 18, 1924, as a route from Pleasanton to Jourdanton. On September 19, 1928, SH 97 was extended south to Rio Grande City via Hebbronville and Tilden; this extension was cancelled on June 25, 1929, and SH 97 was instead extended to Fowlerton; On November 30, 1932, a second section of SH 97 was added from Rio Grande City to Hebbronville, with the possibility of these sections being connected in the future. On February 12, 1934, the northern section extended along a new route to Floresville. (causing the cancellation of SH 168 south of there). On March 13, 1934, the northern section extended to Stockdale, replacing SH 168. Cotulla, Texas
Cotulla ( ) is a city in and the county seat of La Salle County, Texas, United States. Its population was 3,718 as of the 2020 census. History Immigrant Joseph Cotulla, who was reared in Silesia, then a part of Prussia, migrated to the United States in the 1850s. He joined the Union Army in Brownsville, Texas. He lived in Atascosa County, but arrived in La Salle County in 1868 to establish what became a large ranching operation. After learning that the International-Great Northern Railroad intended to lay tracks in La Salle County, he worked to establish the town that bears his name. In 1881, Cotulla donated 120 acres of his land to the railroad, and in 1882, a depot was constructed there. In 1883, the town was granted a post office. The same year, Cotulla became the county seat by special election. Texas State Highway 168
State Highway 168 (SH 168 or TX 168) is a short state highway located entirely within the city of Galveston in the U.S. state of Texas. The highway connects SH 87 to Coast Guard Station Galveston, on the eastern portion of Galveston Island. At just under in length, the highway is the second-shortest in the state, and the shortest signed highway ( SH165, which is shorter, is officially designated but not signed). The road travels along the edge of residential area for most of its length before it bends northeast and runs through a small marsh. The route was first proposed by 1932; it would have traveled through Atascosa and Wilson counties. Portions of the proposal were replaced by SH 97 by at least 1935, while the rest was cancelled. Battle Of Gonzales
The Battle of Gonzales was the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution. It was fought near Gonzales, Texas, on October 2, 1835, between rebellious Texian settlers and a detachment of Mexican army soldiers. In 1831, Mexican authorities lent the settlers of Gonzales a small cannon to help protect them from frequent Comanche raids. Over the next four years, the political situation in Mexico deteriorated, and in 1835 several states revolted. As the unrest spread, Colonel Domingo de Ugartechea, the commander of all Mexican troops in Texas, felt it unwise to leave the residents of Gonzales with a weapon and requested the return of the cannon. When the initial request was refused, Ugartechea sent 100 dragoons to retrieve the cannon. Texas State Highway 3
State Highway 3 (SH 3) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Texas that runs from Interstate 45 in Houston near William P. Hobby Airport to State Highway 146, northwest of Galveston. For most of its length, SH 3 parallels I-45 and runs alongside the former Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad lines. Route description SH 3 begins in Galveston County, south of La Marque near the Texas City Industrial Complex at a junction with SH 146. SH 1 State Highway 1 ran from El Paso through Dallas to Texarkana. It was the first highway designated in 1917. In 1926, the United States Highway System was designated, with US 80 colocated from El Paso to Dallas and US 67 from Dallas to Texarkana. State Highway 72 (SH 72) is a Texas state highway that runs approximately from near Fowlerton to Cuero in South Texas. Route description SH 72 begins in far western McMullen County, near the La Salle County line, at an intersection with SH 97 north of Fowlerton. The highway has no major intersections until it intersects SH 16 north of Tilden. The two routes run concurrently into Tilden, where SH 72 resumes its eastward path, passing south of Choke Canyon Reservoir and State Park before entering Live Oak County. The highway enters Three Rivers, where it intersects and runs concurrently with US 281 through the city center.
