Tethart Philipp Christian Haag
Tethart Philipp Christian Haag (Kassel, 22 May 1737 – The Hague, 23 August 1812) was a Dutch artist and court painter to William V of Orange-Nassau and the director of cultural institutions in The Hague. Biography ;Youth Tethart Haag was the son of Johann David Christian Haag from then Hesse-Kassel, who took him in 1747 to the Netherlands when he was employed there as court painter to Stadhouderlijk Hof in Leeuwarden. When Prince William IV was elevated to stadtholder in 1747 and moved to The Hague, Johann took his son with him to move there. Tethart was taught by his father in painting and in 1756 joined a painting society in The Hague called the Confrerie Pictura, where he registered in 1760 as a portrait and horse painter. ;Court Painter In 1760, Tethart followed his deceased father as court painter to Stadtholder Prince William V. Prince William V Gallery
The Prince William V Gallery is an art gallery on the Buitenhof in The Hague that currently shares an entrance with the Gevangenpoort museum. It is a recreation of the original gallery ''Galerij Prins Willem V'', once founded there by William V, Prince of Orange in 1774. The displayed paintings are part of the collection of the Mauritshuis. Amongst the paintings on display are works by Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Steen, Paulus Potter and Gerard van Honthorst. History Though built in 1774, the gallery has not been continuously open, mostly because the collection was abducted by the French 20 years after it opened and another 20 years passed before most of the works were recovered. In the meantime another gallery was opened in nearby Huis ten Bosch and undeterred by events, Prince William continued collecting art for a new gallery. Buitenhof (The Hague)
The Buitenhof (, The Hague dialect: ''Outer Court'') is a square in The Hague, Netherlands, adjacent to the Binnenhof (''Inner Court'') and the Hofvijver pond. It is listed in the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites. History The square originated in the 13th century, during the construction of the Binnenhof. It was filled with houses and stables and, during the reign of Count Albert I, it even featured a zoo. The zoo exhibited mostly falcons and other birds of prey that were used for hunting. Later, hounds were exhibited as well. The Buitenhof was moated for safety in the 15th century. People that did not belong to the court, lived outside of it, around the Plaats and the Korte Voorhout, and along the Hofvijver. Paulus Potter (; 20 November 1625 (baptised) – 17 January 1654 (buried)) was a Dutch painter who specialized in animals within landscapes, usually with a low vantage point. Before Potter died of tuberculosis at the age of 28 he succeeded in producing about 100 paintings, working continuously. Life Paulus Potter was born in Enkhuizen. He was baptized on 20 November 1625.
