Tetbury Branch Line
The Tetbury branch line was a single-track branch railway line that connected Tetbury with the main line at Kemble, Gloucestershire, Kemble on the line between Swindon and Gloucester. Opened in 1889, the line's usage declined after 1930 as road competition became stronger. In 1959 diesel railbuses were used for the line's passenger services; this initiative halted the decline, but did not reverse the financial losses on the line, and it closed completely in 1964. The main line at Kemble Following on from the successful completion of the Great Western Railway between London and Bristol, there was a desire to open further railways connecting other important centres to the emerging railway network. Tetbury railway station was the terminus station on the Tetbury branch line, serving the Gloucestershire town of Tetbury. History The station was a typical Great Western Railway building, with a wide canopy stretching across the platform. The original station building was constructed from wood. By 1913 it was in need of rebuilding and was completed in brick over the next 3 years. In 1908, confusion between Tetbury railway station and Tetbury Road railway station ( north-east on the Cheltenham and Great Western Union Railway) led to the latter being renamed Coates railway station. Prior to the name change, both stations had taken erroneous delivery of the other's goods. In 1926, the use of the station's signal box was discontinued when the Railroad switch, points began to be operated from a ground frame by the engineman. Stonehouse is a town in the Stroud District of Gloucestershire in southwestern England. The town centre is 2.5 miles east of the M5 motorway, junction 13. Mechanical railway signalling installations rely on lever frames for their operation to interlock the signals, track locks and points to allow the safe operation of trains in the area the signals control. Usually located in the signal box, the levers are operated either by the signalman or the pointsman. The world's largest lever frame is believed to have been in the Spencer Street No.1 signal box in Melbourne, Australia, which had 191 levers, but was decommissioned in 2008. Siddington, Gloucestershire
Siddington is a village and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. It is located immediately south of Cirencester. At the 2011 United Kingdom Census, the parish had a population of 1,249. There is evidence of Neolithic inhabitation of the area. Situated adjacent to Ermin Way, the Roman road connecting present-day Gloucester and Silchester, Siddington has multiple examples of Romano-British settlements. Midland And South Western Junction Railway
The Midland and South Western Junction Railway (M&SWJR) was an independent railway built to form a north–south link between the Midland Railway and the London and South Western Railway in England, allowing the Midland and other companies' trains to reach the port of Southampton. The M&SWJR was formed in 1884 from the amalgamation of the Swindon, Marlborough and Andover Railway and the Swindon and Cheltenham Extension Railway. The line was absorbed by the Great Western Railway at the 1923 grouping of the railways, and became part of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948.
