Japanese Surname
Officially, among Japanese names there are 291,129 different Japanese surnames, as determined by their kanji, although many of these are Japanese orthography, pronounced and romanization of Japanese, romanized similarly. Conversely, some surnames written the same in kanji may also be pronounced differently. The top 10 surnames cover approximately 10% of the population, while the top 100 surnames cover slightly more than 33%. This ranking is a result of an August 2008 study by Meiji Yasuda Life, Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company, which included approximately 6,118,000 customers of Meiji Yasuda's insurance and annuities. Kanzen Teruya
Kanzen Teruya (1920–2004) was an Okinawan physician who contributed much to the Okinawan medical world in post-World War II days. He reported a mass '' Cycas revoluta'' (sago palm) poisoning in people living on Miyako-jima island in 1956. He later became a professor at the University of the Ryukyus (1978–1985). Life Kanzen Teruya () was born in January, 1920 in Shuri, Naha, Okinawa. He graduated from Kyushu Medical College, now the medical department of Kurume University in 1942. In the last days of World War II, he worked as an army physician stationed in Southeast Asia. After repatriation, he went to Kurume and then Okinawa. In 1956, he became the head of Okinawa Health Institute. In November, 1956, he studied a mass '' Cycas revoluta'' poisoning, the first in the world, which occurred because of starvation. Yuken Teruya
Yuken Teruya ( jap. 照屋 勇賢, ''Teruya Yūken;'' born 1973 in Haebaru, Okinawa) is an artist based in New York City and Berlin. Biography Teruya was born and raised in Okinawa. He received his BFA at Tama Art University in 1996, his Postbaccalaureate at Maryland Institute College of Art in 1999 and his MFA at the School of Visual Arts NY. Works Teruya is known equally for his intricate works in paper reflecting on consumer culture as well as for his artful use of traditional textile techniques to deal with political and cultural issues in his homeland Okinawa.
