The 1967 Summer Universiade, also known as the V Summer Universiade, took place in Tokyo, Japan. Eastern Bloc countries including Soviet Union, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Cuba, Czechoslovakia and North Korea boycotted the Games due to the naming disputes about North Korea. Ada Bakker
Ada Bakker (born 8 April 1948) is a former Dutch female tennis player who was active during the 1960s and 1970s. During her career Bakker played in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, namely the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Her most successful Grand Slam was Wimbledon where she reached the third round of the singles event in 1968, 1970, and 1971. Her best doubles result was reaching the quarterfinal of the 1968 Australian Open. Tennis At The Summer Universiade
Tennis has been a part of the Summer Universiade program since the games' first edition in 1959, with the exception of the 1975 Summer Universiade and again in 1989. The first change at the program was at the 1987 edition, when FISU decided awards two bronze medals for the losers of the semifinals, extinguishing the fourth place. The second change was in 2009, when the team competitions were included. Currently, seven events are played at Universiade. Individual, double and team contests for men and women, as well as mixed doubles. Geoff Pollard
Geoffrey Neil Pollard, AM (born 18 January 1944) is an Australian sports administrator and former professional tennis player. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in the 1989 Australia Day Honours list. A left-handed player from Sydney, Pollard was active as a player in the 1960s and 1970s. He lost to John Newcombe in the junior singles final of the 1961 Australian Championships and earned selection on Australia's Junior Davis Cup team. In 1962 he was runner-up to Tony Roche in the 18s and under Orange Bowl tournament. Pollard, a University of Sydney science graduate, partnered with Kaye Dening to win a mixed doubles gold medal at the 1967 Summer Universiade in Tokyo. Helen Kaye Ledgerwood AM (4 June 1945 – 29 October 2019), born Helen Kaye Dening, was an Australian businesswoman and international tennis player. Dening was a top junior player, winning girls' singles titles at the 1962 French Championships and 1964 Australian Championships. Monica Giorgi
Monica Giorgi (born 3 January 1946) is an Italian former professional tennis player. Biography Born in Livorno, Giorgi twice reached the third round of the French Open during her career and played one Federation Cup tie for Italy, against Australia in the 1972 World Group quarter-finals. Giorgi was very politically active and wore an anti-apartheid shirt onto the court for the tie, which was held in South Africa, for which she was briefly banned by the Italian tennis federation. Giorgi was jailed in the early 1980s for her association with anarchist group Azione Rivoluzionaria. Authorities accused her of being involved in an attempted kidnapping, as well as attempted murder for those injured in the attempt, but she was acquitted of all these charges due to insufficient evidence. Astrid Suurbeek
Astrid Suurbeek (born 15 February 1947) is a former Dutch tennis player who was mainly active in the late 1960s. Career Suurbeek won the singles Dutch championship at Scheveningen in 1967 and 1982 as well as the doubles and mixed doubles in 1968. She competed in the 1967 Summer Universiade in Tokyo and won the women's doubles Gold medal with Ada Bakker. Suurbeek played for the Dutch Federation Cup team that reached the 1968 final against Australia, played at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris. Frances Ellen 'Nell' Truman Robinson (12 December 1945 – 8 April 2012), was a female tennis player from the United Kingdom who was active in the 1960s and early 1970s and was mainly known for her performance as a doubles player. Nell Truman was born on 12 December 1945 in Loughton, England, the youngest child of Stanley and Aimee Truman. Her father was a chartered accountant. Koji Watanabe
is a Japanese former international tennis player. He won four career singles titles (1966-1969). Career Watanabe played his first tournament at the Miami Invitational in 1961. He won his first title on clay at Gruneweld, West Germany in August 1966 beating compatriot Ichizo Konishi in three sets.
