Tennis At The 1924 Summer Olympics – Women's Singles
The women's singles tennis competition was one of five tennis events at the 1924 Summer Olympics. It was held from 13 to 20 July at the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir. There were 31 competitors from 14 nations (after 7 withdrawals). The event was won by Helen Wills of the United States, the first American victory in the women's singles. Julie Vlasto of France took silver. Kathleen McKane Godfree of Great Britain repeated as bronze medalist. Background This was the fifth appearance of the women's singles tennis. A women's event was held only once during the first three Games (only men's tennis was played in 1896 and 1904), but has been held at every Olympics for which there was a tennis tournament since 1908. The Stade Yves-du-Manoir (officially Stade olympique Yves-du-Manoir, also known as the Stade olympique de Colombes, or simply Colombes to the locals) is a rugby, track and association football stadium in Colombes, near Paris, France, Paris, France. Kea Bouman
Cornelia "Kea" Tiedemann-Bouman (23 November 1903 – 17 November 1998) was a female tennis player from the Netherlands. She won the singles title at the 1927 French Championships, beating Irene Bowder Peacock of South Africa in the final. Bouman was the first and, to this date, the only Dutch woman who has won a Grand Slam singles title. Bouman additionally won the 1923, 1924, 1925 and 1926 Dutch national tennis championship (singles). Born in Almelo, Bouman is also the first female Dutch athlete to win an Olympic medal in any sport, when she teamed with Hendrik Timmer to win bronze in mixed doubles at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. Lilian Scharman Hester (''née'' Scharman; June 26, 1901 – March 1, 1982) was an American tennis player who was active in the first half of the 1920s. Career She lost to Helen Wills in the first round of Wimbledon in 1924 and competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics. Nora Margaret Polley ( Fischer; 29 July 1894 – 1988) was the first woman to represent India at the Summer Olympics when she competed in the tennis events at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Nora Fischer was born in Budaun, British India, records show that in 1901 she was living in Scotland before going to boarding school in Eastbourne in 1911, she would later marry Sydney Trepess Polley in 1915, who had been serving in the Indian Army since 1902 and would later be promoted to Major. Mary Wallis
Mabel Hilda Wallis (12 November 1900 – 8 December 1979) was an Irish tennis player. Wallis reached the final of the Irish Championships at Dublin for the first time in 1921 where she lost to Elizabeth Ryan. She won the Irish title in 1924, 1926, 1930 and 1933. Phyllis Lindrea Covell ( Howkins. 22 May 1895 – 28 October 1982) was a female tennis player from Great Britain. She is best remembered for her silver medal at the Paris Olympics of 1924 in the women's doubles event partnering with Kitty McKane. In 1923 she won the women's doubles title at the U.S. National Championships with McKane defeating the American pairing of Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman and Eleanor Goss in three sets.
