It is overseen by the Tennessee Department of Education. It was previously in Rolling Mill Hill. History In the era of de jure educational segregation in the United States the school separated black students from white ones. Initially the campus on Hermitage Avenue was reserved for white students, but when the Donelson campus opened, the black students moved to Hermitage, which began educating black students in 1944. A Victorian mansion in Hermitage was the classroom site for white students. The Hermitage campus has Colonial revival architecture. Braille (Pronounced: ) is a tactile writing system used by people who are visually impaired, including people who are Blindness, blind, Deafblindness, deafblind or who have low vision. The Tennessee Schools for the Deaf (TSD) is a state-operated residential and day school for deaf and hard-of-hearing students who reside in the state of Tennessee ranging from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 also includes a post-secondary transition/occupational program. It is located in Knoxville, Tennessee within the historic Island Home Park neighborhood. History General John Alexander Cocke introduced legislation establishing Tennessee School for the Deaf that was passed by the House on January 29, 1844. Revered Thomas MacIntire who was a highly recommended teacher from what is now the Ohio School for the Deaf was selected to lead the school as principal and teacher. Museum Of The American Printing House For The Blind
The Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind opened in 1994 and is located in Louisville, Kentucky. The museum tells the story of the international history of the education of people who are blind, and how the American Printing House for the Blind has contributed to that history. Exhibits focus on tactile systems, writing devices, braille production, orientation and mobility, educational aids and early schools for the blind.
