Temperance Movement
The temperance movement is a social movement promoting temperance or complete abstinence from consumption of alcoholic beverages. Participants in the movement typically criticize alcohol intoxication or promote teetotalism, and its leaders emphasize alcohol's negative effects on people's health, personalities and family lives. Typically the movement promotes alcohol education and it also demands the passage of new laws against the sale of alcohol, either regulations on the availability of alcohol, or the complete prohibition of it. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the temperance movement became prominent in many countries, particularly in English-speaking, Scandinavian, and majority Protestant ones, and it eventually led to national prohibitions in Canada (1918 to 1920), Norway (spirits only from 1919 to 1926), Finland (1919 to 1932), and the United States (1920 to 1933), as well as provincial prohibition in India (1948 to present). Temperance Hall (Dedham, Massachusetts)
Temperance Hall was an assembly hall in Dedham, Massachusetts associated with the temperance movement. It previously served as the Norfolk County Courthouse. History After the creation of Norfolk County in 1793, a new courthouse was ordered to be constructed. It was completed in 1795. It was found to be too small, however, and the ceilings were so low as to stifle people in the courtrooms. After a new Norfolk County Courthouse was constructed in 1827, the old building was sold at public auction to Harris Monroe and Erastus Worthington. The pair speculated that the Town may want to use it as a town hall, and so they dragged it south down Court Street to a new lot. The Town decided to build an entirely new structure, however, on Bullard Street. Worthington and Monroe then rented out the first floor, which had been used as county offices, as a retail space and apartment. It was used for a long time after that as a millinery shop. Cokato Temperance Hall
The Cokato Temperance Hall is a historic clubhouse built in 1896 in Cokato Township, Minnesota, United States, to serve as an alcohol-free social center in a rural Finnish American community. It was constructed by a local temperance society at a rural crossroads which became known as Temperance Corner. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places under its full Finnish name Cokaton P.R.S. Onnen Toivo Raittiusseura in 1976 for its local significance in the themes of European ethnic heritage and social history. It was nominated for its association with the temperance movement and importance to the cultural life of an immigrant community. Mount Hebron Temperance Hall, also known as Division Room of the Saludavill Division No. 47, Sons of Temperance and Division Room of the Mt. Hebron Division No. 7, Sons of Temperance, is a historic temperance hall located at West Columbia, Lexington County, South Carolina. It was built in 1862, and is a small, one-story rectangular frame building. It is sheathed in weatherboard and has a gable roof. The building originally housed local chapters of the Sons of Temperance. It was restored in 1979, and is located in the churchyard of the Mount Hebron United Methodist Church. Temperance Hall is an unincorporated community in northern DeKalb County, Tennessee, United States. It is located approximately west-southwest of Center Hill Dam. It was established in 1798 by Stephen Robinson Sr., one of the first four settlers of DeKalb County. Geography Temperance Hall is located at (36.084, -85.901). The community is situated along State Highway 264 and Smith Fork Creek between Alexandria and Center Hill Lake and has a total area of roughly . Tobermore
Tobermore (, named after the townland of Tobermore) is a small village in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It lies south-south-west of Maghera and north-west of Magherafelt. Tobermore lies within the civil parish of Kilcronaghan and is part of Mid-Ulster District. It was also part of the former barony of Loughinsholin. Tobermore has won the ''Best Kept Small Village'' award four times and the ''Best Kept Large Village'' award in 1986. Most recently in September 2011, Tobermore won the ''Translink Ulster in Bloom'' village category for the third year in a row. The Avalon Theatre is a historic former Temperance Hall, theatre and cinema in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. History A ceremony for the foundation stone of a Temperance Hall was held on 21 March 1889 by the Tasmanian Temperance Alliance, which included members of the Society of Friends. Opening 1 May 1890, the Temperance Hall was used for religious gatherings, tea drinking, live entertainment and family-focused activities. Notably, the Temperance Hall was used for meetings surrounding Women's suffrage in Australia and visited by Jessie Ackermann of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, who spoke at the hall in 1892. As influence of the Temperance movement in Australia waned following The Great War, the venue was increasingly used for dances, skating and as a cinema projecting silent films.
