Federal Telecommunications Institute
The Federal Telecommunications Institute ( Spanish: ''Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones''; abbreviated as IFT and incorrectly referred to as IFETEL) is an independent government agency of Mexico charged with the regulation of telecommunications and broadcasting services. It was formed on September 10, 2013, as part of larger reforms to Mexican telecom regulations, and replaced the Federal Telecommunications Commission (Cofetel). The current President of the IFT is Gabriel Oswaldo Contreras Saldívar. History On August 8, 1996, President Ernesto Zedillo created Cofetel, which originally was based in the tower of the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation. In 2013, President Enrique Peña Nieto created the IFT to replace Cofetel as part of the telecommunications reform package of the Pacto por México. XHBR-TDT is a television station in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The station carries Televisa's local programming in Nuevo Laredo. History XHBR received its concession on March 18, 1968 and came to air that October, broadcasting on analog channel 11. It was owned by Ramona Esparza González for 20 years until she transferred the station to Televisa subsidiary Televisión de Lerma, S.A., on July 19, 1988. Esparza González had bought XEFE-TV two years earlier. Televisa raised XHBR's effective radiated power from 3.5 to 325 kilowatts. In 2001, Televisión de Lerma was merged into Televimex, and in 2018 the concession was reassigned to Televisora de Occidente amid a major reorganization of concessions that saw them organized by service. XHLAR-TDT is a television station in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. It is owned by Grupo Televisa and carries its Las Estrellas network. The station's studios and transmitter are located on Avenida de la República in Nuevo Laredo. History On March 9, 1994, Radiotelevisora de México Norte, S.A. de C.V., a subsidiary of Televisa, was authorized to build 62 new stations, including channel 57 in Nuevo Laredo, with the call sign XHNUL-TV. XHNUL and sister XHRTA-TV in Reynosa, however, did not sign on with Mexican programming. Nuevo Laredo () is a city in the Municipality of Nuevo Laredo in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The city lies on the banks of the Rio Grande, across from Laredo, United States. The 2010 census population of the city was 373,725. Nuevo Laredo is part of the Laredo-Nuevo Laredo Metropolitan Area with a population of 636,516. The municipality has an area of . XHTAM-TDT, virtual channel 2 (UHF digital channel 28), is a dual Las Estrellas/ Canal 5 television station located in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, whose over-the-air signal also covers the Rio Grande Valley across the international border in the United States. Matamoros, officially known as Heroica Matamoros, is a city in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, and the municipal seat of the homonymous municipality.
