The Fondaco dei Tedeschi ( Venetian: ''Fòntego dei Todeschi'', in literal English, "warehouse of the Germans") is a historic building in Venice, northern Italy, situated on the Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge. It was the headquarters and restricted living quarters of the city's German (''Tedeschi'') merchants. Name The word ''fondaco'' comes from the Arabic ''funduq'' (), which refers to an inn-like establishment for traveling merchants. ''Tedeschi'' means Germans. History First constructed in 1228, the building was rebuilt between 1505 and 1508, after its destruction in a fire. The reconstruction produced a very functional four-floor building which surrounds a grand inner courtyard. Its architecture is typical of the Italian Renaissance style. San Giorgio ai Tedeschi is a Roman Catholic church located in the centre of Pisa, Italy. The brickchurch was built after 1316 in memory of the German soldiers who died in the Battle of Montecatini; it was called ''San Giorgio degli Innocenti'' because in 1414 it belonged to the ''Ospedale dei Trovatelli'' (hospital of the foundlings); then from 1784 it belonged to the Ospedali Riuniti di Santa Chiara. The church, built entirely in brick, consists of only one room. Tedeschi Food Shops was a chain of nearly 200 convenience stores (as of March 2015), located primarily in Massachusetts, with some stores in New Hampshire. It was acquired by 7- Eleven in May 2015, and the transaction closed in August 2015. According to a spokesman for 7-Eleven, conversion of the Tedeschi-branded stores to the 7-Eleven banner will be gradual. History Angelo Tedeschi (pronounced tuh-DESS-key), in 1923, opened a store in the basement of the family home in Rockland, Massachusetts. Since then, the Tedeschi family has been involved in the retail food industry, early on in the grocery store industry, and more recently in the convenience store industry. In 1972, the Tedeschi family acquired the Curtis Compacts chain of convenience stores, which was later renamed to Tedeschi Food Shops.
