Ted Russell (Irish Politician)
George Edward Russell (1 April 1912 – 28 November 2004) was an Irish politician and company director. Born into a prosperous Limerick merchant family, Russell was educated first at Crescent College in Limerick and for a short time Mount St Benedict's near Gorey at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. Russell first stood for election as a Clann na Poblachta candidate at the 1948 general election but was not elected. He was also an unsuccessful candidate at the 1951 general election and the 1952 Limerick East by-election. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann as an independent Teachta Dála (TD) for the Limerick East constituency at the 1957 general election. He lost his seat at the 1961 general election. He was elected to the 12th Seanad in 1969 on the Industrial and Commercial Panel and was re-elected to the 13th Seanad in 1973. He was defeated at the 1977 Seanad election. Limerick ( ; ga, Luimneach ) is a western city in Ireland situated within County Limerick. It is in the province of Munster and is located in the Mid-West which comprises part of the Southern Region. 1965 Irish General Election
The 1965 Irish general election to the 18th Dáil was held on Wednesday, 7 April, following the dissolution of the 17th Dáil on 18 March by President Éamon de Valera on the request of Taoiseach Seán Lemass. The general election took place in 38 Dáil constituencies throughout Ireland for 144 seats in Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas. The governing Fianna Fáil saw a slight increase, though did not obtain a majority. The 18th Dáil met at Leinster House on 21 April to nominate the Taoiseach for appointment by the president and to approve the appointment of a new government of Ireland. Mayor Of Limerick
The office of Mayor of the City and County of Limerick is currently the title used by the chairperson of Limerick City and County Council. Prior to the establishment of the council, the Mayor of Limerick was the chairperson of Limerick City Council. The office was originally established in 1195 and reinforced by a charter issued in 1197. Election to the office The Mayor is elected to office annually by councillors of Limerick City and County Council from amongst its members. There is currently no popular vote, but in May 2019 a plebiscite was held during 2019 Irish local elections, the local elections which voted in favour of a directly elected mayor, with the first expected to be elected in 2022. The 1967 Irish local elections were held in all the counties, cities and towns of Ireland on Wednesday, 28 June 1967. The result was a large gain in seats for Fine Gael, while Fianna Fáil and Labour remained largely unchanged on net seat totals. Others, including independents and Sinn Féin, lost many seats. Under the Electoral Act 1963, the elections were due to be held in 1965. However, they were postponed twice. The context of the elections was an Ireland in the process of rapid modernisation. Elections were held on 20 September 1950 for the councils of most of the counties, cities and towns of the Republic of Ireland. The exceptions were three councils which had been elected in 1948: Dublin County Council and Kerry County Council, which were reinstated in 1948 after earlier suspension; and in Tramore, which gained town commissioners in 1948 for the first time. 1945 Irish Local Elections
The 1945 local elections in Ireland were held on 14 June 1945 to fill all council seats for most counties and county boroughs and municipal towns. The state was still under the Emergency of the Second World War. As a cost-saving measure, electoral law was amended to bring forward the date of the local elections a few weeks to coincide with the 1945 presidential election. Dublin County Council and Kerry County Council had been dissolved, and no elections were held for their councils. There was no poll for six urban district councils and four town commissioners because the number of candidates did not exceed the number of seats. Results The elections were by single transferable vote. The total valid votes cast was 1,152,691. Totals of invalid votes were not aggregated from local counts.
