''Tanums store rettskrivningsordbok'' is a Norwegian Bokmål dictionary. It was first published by the publishing house Johan Grundt Tanums forlag in 1940 as ''Norsk Rettskrivningsordbok''. The 10th and latest edition was published in 2015. Initial edition The work was initiated by philologist Jakob Sverdrup in 1936, who edited the dictionary until his death in 1938. After his death linguist and educator Marius Sandvei took over the responsibility as editor. The first edition of the dictionary was published in 1940 by the publishing house Johan Grundt Tanums forlag, with the title ''Norsk Rettskrivningsordbok''. Later editions Later editions of the dictionary are called ''Tanums store rettskrivningsordbok'', and are also referred to as ''Tanum'' or ''Sverdrup-Sandvei''. Norwegian Language
Norwegian ( no, norsk, links=no ) is a North Germanic language spoken mainly in Norway, where it is an official language. Along with Swedish and Danish, Norwegian forms a dialect continuum of more or less mutually intelligible local and regional varieties; some Norwegian and Swedish dialects, in particular, are very close. These Scandinavian languages, together with Faroese and Icelandic as well as some extinct languages, constitute the North Germanic languages. Bokmål
Bokmål () (, ; ) is an official written standard for the Norwegian language, alongside Nynorsk. Bokmål is the preferred written standard of Norwegian for 85% to 90% of the population in Norway. Unlike, for instance, the Italian language, there is no nationwide standard or agreement on the pronunciation of Bokmål. Bokmål is regulated by the governmental Language Council of Norway. A more conservative orthographic standard, commonly known as ''Riksmål'', is regulated by the non-governmental Norwegian Academy for Language and Literature. The written standard is a Norwegianised variety of the Danish language. Jakob Sverdrup (philologist)
Jakob Sverdrup (10 April 1881 – 21 November 1938) was a Norwegian philologist and lexicographer. Personal life He was born in Leikanger as a son of the bishop and politician Jakob Sverdrup (1845–1899). He was a brother of Georg Johan Sverdrup, uncle of historian Jakob Sverdrup, a first cousin of Harald Ulrik Sverdrup, Jr, and Leif Sverdrup, a nephew of Georg Sverdrup and Edvard Sverdrup, grandson of Harald Ulrik Sverdrup, Sr, grandnephew of Johan Sverdrup and great-grandson of Jacob Liv Borch Sverdrup. Marius Sandvei
Marius Sandvei (15 January 1905 – 1 November 1993) was a Norwegian linguist, educator and language politician. He is particularly known for his long-term editing of the Norwegian normative dictionary '' Tanums store rettskrivningsordbok''. Sandvei was born in Trondheim as the son of police officer Ole Sandvei and Johanne Sæther. He finished his secondary education in Trondheim in 1924, and graduated from the Royal Frederick University in 1930, his main subject being the Norwegian language. In 1930 he also married Antonette Kristine Nielsen. He lectured in Norwegian language and literature in Berlin (1930-1931) and Stockholm (1931-1935). From 1935 he taught at the Trondheim Cathedral School. From 1946 he was head teacher of secondary schools, first in Kristiansund, and from 1955 to 1975 at Grefsen. Kunnskapsforlaget () is a Norwegian publishing company based in Oslo. Kunnskapsforlaget was established in 1975, as a partnership between H. Aschehoug & Co. (W. Nygaard) and Gyldendal Norsk Forlag. The purpose was to co-operate on publishing encyclopaedias and dictionaries. The first volume of Store norske leksikon (SNL) was published in 1978. Bokmålsordboka () is a dictionary of the Norwegian written language called Bokmål (lit. "book language"). It is published by the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Oslo in cooperation with the Norwegian Language Council. ''Norsk Riksmålsordbok'' () is a Norwegian dictionary for the unofficial written language form Riksmål. The work was initiated by ''Riksmaalsvernet'' around 1920. Its first edition was completed in 1957, and was printed in four volumes. Two extra volumes were issued in 1995.
