The Winter War (film)
''The Winter War'' ( fi, Talvisota) is a 1989 Finnish war film directed by Pekka Parikka, and based on the novel ''Talvisota'' by Antti Tuuri. It is set in the Winter War and tells the story of a Finnish infantry regiment from Southern Ostrobothnia fighting on the Karelian Isthmus, focusing mainly on a platoon of reservists from Kauhava. The film was released in Finland and Sweden on 30 November 1989, the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Winter War, and in the United States in December 1989. The film won six Jussi Awards and was selected as the Finnish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 63rd Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. Plot On 13 October 1939, reservists of the Finnish army are called up for active duty as the threat of Soviet invasion becomes likely. Antti Elias Tuuri (born 1 October 1944, Kauhava, Southern Ostrobothnia) is a Finnish writer, known for his works dealing with Southern Ostrobothnia. The ''Äitini-suku''-series tells the stories of the Finns who emigrated to the United States. He received the J. H. Erkko Award in 1971 for ''Asioiden suhteet ja Lauantaina illalla'', The Nordic Council's Literature Prize in 1985 for ''Pohjanmaa'', and the Finlandia Prize in 1997 for his novel ''Lakeuden kutsu''. ''Talvisota: Icy Hell'' (Russian "Talvisota: Ледяной ад") is a real-time tactics and educational computer game, developed by the international developer group Blitzfront Game Studio and is based on the events of the Winter War ( fi, talvisota) conflict of 1939–1940 between Finland and the Soviet Union. ''The Art of War'' is the fourth album by Swedish Heavy metal music, heavy metal band Sabaton (band), Sabaton. The album is based on the ancient Chinese military treatise, ''The Art of War'' written by General Sun Tzu in the 6th century BC. It consists of 13 chapters, each of which describe a different aspect of warfare, and is considered the definitive work on military tactics and strategies of its time. The tracks on the album correspond to each chapter of treatise. The lyrics of the songs are about famous battles or war, mostly based on the battles of the World War I, First and World War II, Second World Wars where Sun Tzu's tactics were applied. Suomen Talvisota 1939–1940 was a provocative Finnish rock band in the years 1969 and 1970. Their only album is called ''Underground-Rock''. Lyrics for the band were provided under pseudonyms by M.A. Numminen and the Turku poets Markku Into (under the pseudonym Taannehtiva Seuralainen) and Jarkko Laine (under the pseudonym Lauri Kenttä, a reference to Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent).
