It is called an existence theorem because a main burden of the proof is to show the existence of enough abelian extensions of ''K''. Class Field Theory
In mathematics, class field theory (CFT) is the fundamental branch of algebraic number theory whose goal is to describe all the abelian Galois extensions of local and global fields using objects associated to the ground field. Hilbert is credited as one of pioneers of the notion of a class field. However, this notion was already familiar to Kronecker and it was actually Weber who coined the term before Hilbert's fundamental papers came out. The relevant ideas were developed in the period of several decades, giving rise to a set of conjectures by Hilbert that were subsequently proved by Takagi and Artin (with the help of Chebotarev's theorem). One of the major results is: given a number field ''F'', and writing ''K'' for the maximal abelian unramified extension of ''F'', the Galois group of ''K'' over ''F'' is canonically isomorphic to the ideal class group of ''F''. Hilbert Class Field
In algebraic number theory, the Hilbert class field ''E'' of a number field ''K'' is the maximal abelian unramified extension of ''K''. Its degree over ''K'' equals the class number of ''K'' and the Galois group of ''E'' over ''K'' is canonically isomorphic to the ideal class group of ''K'' using Frobenius elements for prime ideals in ''K''. In this context, the Hilbert class field of ''K'' is not just unramified at the finite places (the classical ideal theoretic interpretation) but also at the infinite places of ''K''. That is, every real embedding of ''K'' extends to a real embedding of ''E'' (rather than to a complex embedding of ''E''). Helmut Hasse (; 25 August 1898 – 26 December 1979) was a German mathematician working in algebraic number theory, known for fundamental contributions to class field theory, the application of ''p''-adic numbers to local class field theory and diophantine geometry (Hasse principle), and to local zeta functions. In mathematics, a class formation is a topological group acting on a module satisfying certain conditions. Class formations were introduced by Emil Artin and John Tate to organize the various Galois groups and modules that appear in class field theory. ''Mathematische Annalen'' (abbreviated as ''Math. Ann.'' or, formerly, ''Math. Annal.'') is a German mathematical research journal founded in 1868 by Alfred Clebsch and Carl Neumann. Teiji Takagi
Teiji Takagi (高木 貞治 ''Takagi Teiji'', April 21, 1875 – February 28, 1960) was a Japanese mathematician, best known for proving the Takagi existence theorem in class field theory. The Blancmange curve, the graph of a nowhere-differentiable but uniformly continuous function, is also called the Takagi curve after his work on it. Biography He was born in the rural area of the Gifu Prefecture, Japan. He began learning mathematics in middle school, reading texts in English since none were available in Japanese. After attending a high school for gifted students, he went on to the Imperial University (later Tokyo Imperial University), at that time the only university in Japan before the Imperial University System was established on June 18, 1897. Emil Artin
Emil Artin (; March 3, 1898 – December 20, 1962) was an Austrian mathematician of Armenian descent. Artin was one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century. He is best known for his work on algebraic number theory, contributing largely to class field theory and a new construction of L-functions. He also contributed to the pure theories of rings, groups and fields. Along with Emmy Noether, he is considered the founder of modern abstract algebra. In geometry, ramification is 'branching out', in the way that the square root function, for complex numbers, can be seen to have two ''branches'' differing in sign.
