Taiwan Railway EMU100 Series
The Taiwan Railway EMU100 series was a set of rail cars fabricated by British Rail Engineering Limited and the General Electric Company in 1976 that has operated in Taiwan. The alternating current electric multiple unit (EMU) fleet entered full squadron service in 1979, and was withdrawn from service in 2009. This class of railcars were the first to operate on the electric ''Tzu-Chiang Express''. Due to the unit's British origin, rail buffs have variously nicknamed them "British Girl", "British Lady", or "British Grandma" (). Background In the early 1970s, the West Coast Mainline Electrification Scheme was already planned. Tzu-Chiang Express
The Tze-Chiang Express, also spelled "Tzu-chiang" or "Ziqiang" () is a type of express train service operated by the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) in Taiwan. Of the five service classes operated by the TRA, the Tze-Chiang trains is the fastest category. Ticketing is done on the basis of mileage (NT$2.27 per km with a 10 km minimum fee). This service is operated with 7 different trainsets: the E1000 series, the EMU1200 ( electric multiple unit), EMU300, TEMU1000 (''Taroko Express''), DR2800 ( diesel multiple unit), DR3100, and the TEMU2000 (''Puyuma Express''). Transformer
A transformer is a passive component that transfers electrical energy from one electrical circuit to another circuit, or multiple circuits. Taichung Line
The Taichung line (), also known as the Mountain line (), is a line of the Taiwan Railway Administration, which one of two parallel lines in Central Taiwan section offsetting to inland mountain area. It has a total length of 85.5 km, all of which is double track, passing Downtown Taichung. History The Taichung Line was completed in 1908. After the Coast Line between Zhunan and Changhua was finished in 1922, the original line was called Taichung Line. In 1998, the construction to expand to two tracks ( double tracks) was completed. Long tunnels were built to reduce the grade of the line. Sanyi Tunnel is one of the longest railway tunnels in Taiwan. Former Mountain Line
The Former Mountain line () is a railway branch line in Taiwan operated by the Taiwan Railways Administration. The name literally means "old Mountain line" (another name for the Taichung line) and can refer to any section of the Taichung line that ceased operations when it was replaced by a newer rail. However, the term is most widely used to refer to the segment between Sanyi and Houli stations. The line was completed in 1903 and began operations in 1908. Operantions were suspended on September 24, 1998 with the opening of a newer route to the west, and all stations between Sanyi and Houli closed down. Between June 5–9, 2010, to promote tourism, the Former Mountain Line resumed service between Sanyi and Tai'an Old station using a steam locomotive numbered CK124. EMU400 Series
The Taiwan Railway EMU400 was an electric train purchased by Taiwan Railway from South Africa in 1990 and is the first-generation of commuter electric train for Taiwan Railways. A total of 48 vehicles in 12 groups have been introduced, which have been put into commuter train services between Hsinchu and Keelung since the beginning of operation, replacing the non-air-conditioned commuter buses formerly used along the route. Due to the introduction of EMU800 series electric trains, all EM400 units have been withdrawn from service in 2015. EMU200 Series
The EMU1200 series is a series of electric multiple unit passenger trains operated by Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA). The train was originally known as the EMU200 series until all of its cars were refurbished between 2002 and 2004. It is one of the trains that are used for the ''Tze-Chiang Limited Express''. History In 1978, the TRA introduced the ''Tze-Chiang'' class of trains with the EMU100 series running on newly-electrified tracks between Taipei and Taichung. This service proved to be extremely popular, prompting the TRA to purchase more trains to meet demand. In 1984, the TRA awarded Union Carriage & Wagon (UC&W) to build 33 railcars with three cars in each trainset, to be named as the EMU200 series.
